Winding Insulation

The document discusses winding insulation testing for transformers. It describes different transformer types and their insulation components that are tested. The overall test procedure is explained, including how to short circuit windings and connect leads for various test modes on two-winding and three-winding transformers, including autotransformers. Recommended test voltages are provided based on transformer winding ratings. Guidelines for interpreting transformer insulation test results are given. Potential interference factors for power factor measurements like electrostatic interference, surface leakage, and humidity are also discussed.

Winding Insulation Testing for

Transformers
Transformer Types
• Power and distribution transformers may
be either single-phase or three-phase
– Three-Winding
– Two-Winding
– Autotransformer (with or without a tertiary
winding)
• They may be liquid-insulated, gas-
insulated, or dry-type.
The Overall Test-Short the Winding

disconnected from Ground in test results!
Reason for Short Circuiting Winding

• Maintain equipotential across the

entire winding
• Winding should remain short circuited
for Overall and Bushing C1 tests

GENERAL GUIDELINES!
Interference Factors affecting PF
Measurement
•Electrostatic Interference

•Surface Leakage

•Humidity

•Temperature
Electrostatic Interference

•Use of double screened HV cables

•Off frequency measurement

•Avoid capacitance coupling to adjacent

metalwork- eg scaffolding
Surface Leakage
Interference Factors affecting PF Measurement

•Leakage over the porcelain surface of

the specimen and gets added to the
losses

–Cleaning of insulation surface

–UST mode measurement where
ever possible
Humidity

Interference Factors affecting PF Measurement

Moisture condensation on the surface

will increase surface losses

–Measurement to be carried out on

dry weather where relative humidity
does not exceed more than 80%
–Measurement during sunny day
–Cleaning of insulators before test
Temperature
Interference Factors affecting PF Measurement

Dielectric loss changes with temperature

Tanδ δT0 e α(T-T0)

δT = Tanδ

α = Temperature Coefficient
= (ln TanδT – ln TanδT0)/ (T – T0)

Case Study - Capacitance
• 275/132/22 kV autotransformer
• 315 MVA, Free breather with single phase
diverters
• Tripped on tapchanger pressure
• Clear indication that the blue phase diverter
was damaged.
• Questions:
– What other damage?
– Can we repair the tapchanger and return to service
“critical” transformer?
Transformer was tested before ! We have
reference data.
Case Study - Capacitance
• Note the change in capacitance
• Indication of winding movement
• Not very sensitive
• SFRA and Leakage Reactance – better
• Does not indicate which phase

Value
• Tanδ and capacitance indicates:
– Dryness;
– Carbonisation;
– Conducting particles;
– Improperly grounded core;
– Winding movement; and
– Structural insulating members.
• Quality control after purification and
regeneration
Things to look out for!
• Changers in tanδ and capacitance
• Is the neutral disconnected
• Is the core ground connected
• Correct connections (GST or UST)

• THE NUT BEHIND THE WHEEL
