HEARING IMPAIRMENT
Hearing impairments are classified in terms of the severity and type of hearing impairment. The
severity of the hearing impairment is categorized based on the minimum sound that can be
heard with your better ear. The higher the decibel (dB), the louder the sound. With moderate
hearing impairment, the minimum sound that can be heard is between 40 and 70 dB. People at
this level cannot hear soft or moderately loud noises and may have trouble hearing unless they
use a hearing aid.People who experience hearing loss face different challenges, depending on
when it occurs and how long it takes to develop. They might have to become familiar with new
equipment, undergo surgery, learn sign language and lip reading, and use various
communication devices.Miscommunication can place a strain on relationships, not only for the
person with the hearing impairment, but also the people around them. If the hearing loss is
gradual and has not yet been diagnosed, family members may mistakenly believe that the
individual with the condition is becoming more distant.Moderate deafness or moderate hearing
impairment: The person can only detect sounds between 40 and 69 dB. While individual studies
have looked at the various factors that are associated with improved peer relationships and
hearing peers, no systematic review of the findings has yet been undertaken. By exploring these
factors, parents, professionals, and policy makers are best informed to support and develop
interventions to help and enjoy positive social interactions, peer acceptance, and deep and
meaningful friendships with their hearing peers.Peer interaction is an important contributor to
social development in all children. Hearing loss can create barriers in communication between
children, thus the quality and quantity of peer interaction of deaf and hard-of-hearing (D/HH)
children is a topic of interest to both practitioners and researchers. D/HH children have been
found to interact less with peers and engage in less social play than hearing children of the
same age. Conductive hearing loss is when a hearing impairment is due to problems in the
outer ear, middle ear, ear canal, eardrum, or the ossicles , which are the tiny bones in the
middle ear. When the sound is not being conducted properly through the ear, conductive
hearing loss occurs. Most cases of conductive hearing loss can be corrected medically or
surgically. Hearing impairment as a disability category is similar to the category of deafness, but
it is not the same. The official definition of a hearing impairment by the Individuals with
Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is “an impairment in hearing, whether permanent or
fluctuating, that adversely affects a child’s educational performance but is not included under
the definition of ‘deafness.'” Thus, knowing the definition of deafness is necessary to
understand what sort of disabilities are considered hearing impairments. A hearing loss above
90 decibels is generally considered deafness, which means that a hearing loss below 90 decibels
is classified as a hearing impairment. Most people with permanent hearing loss can benefit from
a hearing aid . You typically wear these tiny instruments in or behind your ear to make sounds
louder. Things do sound different through a hearing aid though, so you should talk with your
doctor to set realistic goals.Functional hearing loss occurs when the functioning of the ears is
normal, but the person is showing a reduced response or not responding at all to sounds.
Because there are no functional hearing problems in individuals with functional hearing loss, it
is the most difficult type of hearing loss to detect and the most often misdiagnosed. Functional
hearing loss is caused by mental health problems, such as ADHD and depression.
