INTRODUCTION
Trolex has designed the new system “AIR SAMPLING FIRE DETECTION UNIT” which provides
the early warning by detecting the presence of smoldering fires through its opto Electronic
smoke detectors 1 & 2 which is controlled by HLL Programmed Advanced Micro –Processor
with visual indicators.
UNPACKING & INSPECTION
Trolex Fire Detection System is a Simple unit, which suits for Electric locomotives. The
following safety precautions should be followed while handling & unpacking the Fire
Detection Unit.
Before Installing the Unit in to the Loco (SB2 Panel) check for any physical damages if
any.
The supply connections through 25 pin Sub D connector should be provided only as
per the connection diagram specified in IOD.
Check for the Unit Power ON Condition (Green Indicator in the front panel should glow)
by applying 24 V DC supply through Power input points as specified in Connection
diagram.
Check for the output voltage by using Digital Multimeter probes in to the RED & Black
socket available in the front panel of the FDU. Normally the output voltage should be
within ±100mv.
If the output of the unit is well within ±100mv then the unit can be installed in the
loco.
If the output is not within the ±100mv then vary the Calibration adjuster pot available
in the front panel of the unit to the limit required so that to make the unit ready for
installation.

PRINCIPLE OPERATING FEATURES
ITX 6340 Air Sampling Fire Detector (ASFD) comprised of the Micro Controller Which
Controller the function of the following major parts.
Two optical electronic smoke detectors.
Airflow sensor for air flow monitoring through suction unit.
Visual indicators in the front panel of the unit for Power ON indication, Fault
/Malfunction & Smoke detection.
Reset button to reset the unit to the normal condition after taking necessary action
if smoke is detected.
Calibration Adjuster Pot in the front panel of the unit to adjust the unit output
voltage within ±100mv.
Red & Black colour socket in the front panel to measure the output voltage of the
unit.
The primary purpose of this unit is to detect smoke generated by smoldering fires and flaming
fires produced in the area around the suction pipe.
The ASFD is coupled to the suction pipe (25mm OD) through a PG29 gland entry. Air samples
are drawn through the opening on the suction pipe which has up to 20 distributed smoke
entries.
The ASFD can be broadly divided into two parts namely:
Smoke detector system.
Air flow monitoring system
If the smoke detector detects fire aerosols in the air sample a visual alarm indication
is displayed i.e. SD1 & SD2 glows which are available in the front panel of the FDU,
also the variation in input voltage to the MC will give signal to the MC as programmed
& message will be passed to the master computer of the locomotive.
The Trolex Fire Detection Unit is designed to provide the Output in three different
stages with the variation in its output voltage depending on the Air flow to the unit
through the Suction Unit.

The three stages of Indications are “Normal Condition, Rupture Condition & Blockage
Condition.
If the Air flow is moderate then the Unit will be in the Normal Condition with its
output voltage within ±100mv.
If the unit senses the inadequate flow /Blockage in the hole of the suction pipe then
Fault Indication LED will glow & the output voltage will be > ‐1.0V.
Similarly, if the unit senses overflow of the air / if the air flow is too high pipe break in
the suction pipe then also Fault Indication LED will glow & the output voltage will be
> +1.0 V.

TECHNICAL DATA
There are four choices for time delay which can be selected by Selector Switch SW1
The Trolex FDU is set for default delay time for 2 minutes.
To change the delay time switch contact (1&2) arrangement must be changed by opening
the top cover of the unit and there by access the switch mounted on the control PCB.
MOUNTING OF THE FIRE DETECTOR UNIT
Mount the FDU using the 4 free holes provided in the rear side of the Unit using M6
hex head screw.
Rubber vibration absorbers should be used while mounting.
Ensure proper Positioning of the FDU so that the operator can easily access it.
Also Ensure that Air outlet vent is clear without obstructions.

SUCTION UNIT
The suction system i.e. the suction pipe must be installed in such a way that pipe should
not sag nor be able to shift.
The pipes should be fixed using clamps.
No. of pipe clamping and the spacings should be such that the pipe should not sag and
it should firmly be held at a place.
The pipe should be routed in such a way that it should not obstruct to access the other
equipment and during normal operation the pipe should not be damaged.
A flexible link between the fire detector and the suction system must be installed since
the fire detector may move slightly up/down if it is mounted on the vibration absorbers
during the vibration/running condition.
Pipes should be routed in such a way to avoid length and bending, as minimum as
possible and the bending should be preferably 90 degree angle.
Connect the Suction pipe to the FDU through PG 29 gland.
Unscrew the PG union nut and then slide it over the suction pipe, which is to be
connected. Insert the pipe into the union piece till the adapter (about 4cm) and then
tighten the union nut by hand.
CALIBRATION PROCESS
Before calibrating the unit must Switch on the unit & keep it to operate in the normal
running temperature for at least 5 minutes.
Calibration of airflow sensor is carried out using the potentiometer fitted in the Front
panel of the FDU.
Connect the multimeter probes between the red (+ve lead) and black (‐ve lead) sockets
located on the front panel. Turn the potentiometer screw clockwise or anticlockwise
until a voltage of 0V ±100mv is displayed.
Note: Normally the airflow sensor signal will oscillate (about ±100mv) in any instant
of time, as the airflow through the fan will be of turbulence in nature. Always use high
impedance battery‐powered Multimeter/voltmeter.

CHECKING OF AIR FLOW MONITORING
A. To Check Pipe Fracture Detection:
Disconnect the pipe from PG gland and measure the voltage of the Unit by connecting
the voltmeter across the measuring sockets of airflow sensor.
The voltage measured should be more than +1.0V.
The fault/malfunctioning LED will be ON after the delay time elapses (Default 2
minutes) provided the voltage is more than +1.0V.
Reconnect the pipe & tighten the union by hand. The fault LED should be OFF and the
voltage across the measuring sockets should be ±100mv.
To Check Pipe Blockage
Close half of the suction openings using adhesive tapes. Connect the Voltmeter across
the measuring sockets of the airflow sensor.
The voltage measured should be negative and should be more than 1.0V.
The fault LED indicator will be ON only if the airflow sensor signal crosses the threshold
voltage level and after the set time (delay) elapses.
Remove the adhesive tapes. The fault LED should be OFF and the voltage across the
measuring sockets should be ±100mv.
If there is no change in the airflow sensor signal during rupture/blockage condition, then
the airflow sensor might be faulty.
B. CHECKING OF SMOKE DETECTOR
Smoke detector can be checked by spraying the test aerosol into the opening of the detector
or using a bee hive fumigator held on one or several of the suction openings. The alarm
smoke detector 1& 2 LEDs should glow and the message must be passed to the main
computer through the relay contacts.
Even after diluting the smoke, the alarm should latch until the reset button is pressed.

C. VISUAL INSPECTION
After checking the airflow monitoring and smoke detector the following visual inspection
must be carried.
The cover screws are tightened properly.
The PG gland union is tightened firmly.
The sub‐D plug is secured tightly.
The suction system (Pipes) installed firmly & is not damaged.
All the suction openings of the pipes are not obstructed.
The air outlet opening of the detector unit is not obstructed.
MAINTENANCE
A. AIR FLOW MONITORING
Check the calibration of the airflow sensor. The voltage must lie in the range of ±100mv. In
the event of non‐compliance with the permissible deviations the suction system must
be inspected for breaks and blockages.
Inspect:
Whether all the holes or openings of the pipes are unobstructed.
Whether the pipe system has any breaks or cracks on the pipe.
Whether all pipe connections are tight and any leakages found.
If there is no problem/defect in suction system recalibrate the airflow sensor. In addition,
check for detection of breakages as described in section 6.2 can also be carried out.
B. REPLACING OF FILTER FOR AIRFLOW SENSOR
The filter for the air flow sensor can be replaced if the airflow monitoring malfunctions many
times or if the frequent calibration of airflow sensor is carried out. Otherwise it is suggested
to replace the air filter at least once in 2 years.
