PANTO Not Raising in Three Phase Loco

The document provides troubleshooting instructions for an issue where the pantograph would not raise and the VCB would not close in certain locomotives due to low pressure in the pantograph reservoir. It identifies potential causes such as moisture accumulation, air leaks, and improper valve positions and provides corrective actions like draining moisture and preventing air leaks. Locomotive pilots must be counseled on following preventive steps like ensuring proper valve positions and operation to avoid such failures.

Troubleshooting for Pantograph not raising and VCB not closing in CCB-2
(KNNOR-BREMSE) brake system in 3 – phase Locos

Recently LP couldn’t raise pantograph of Loco no. 39036/P/GZB after taking the charge of the
loco as panto reservoir pressure was not increasing more than 4.0 Kg/cm2. Finally after draining
panto reservoir, the pressure could be maintained, pantograph was raised and VCB was closed.
In this process, the train lost punctuality.

This problem is normally observed in KNORR-BREMSE make of CCB-2 type Brake System.
Just by having little knowledge of location of valves, will help in troubleshooting the problem and
avoid detention/failure of locos.

1. Root Cause Analysis :

Brake system type CCB-2 of KNORR-BREMSE make has got different piping layout/circuit
from of E-70 brake system. Possible causes for pressure not building up in panto reservoir:

1.1. Accumulation of water (moisture) in

Panto Reservoir ( AC RES) leading to
malfunctioning of pressure switches.
1.2. Air leakage from non-return-valve (CV) in
between MR-2 and panto-reservoir as
leakage of CV leads entering of panto air
into MR circuit.
1.3. Air leakage from non-return-valve (AC
CV) after aux. (baby) compressor will
take more time in building up pressure in
panto reservoir.
1.4. Air leakage from Un-loader valve(UL1 &
UL2) as minor leakage from un-loader
valve would lead to not building up of
pressure in panto reservoir.
1.5. KABA Key (IG 38) is kept in
horizontal(CLOSE) position.

2. Corrective Action:
2.1. Ensure KABA Key( IG 38) is kept in vertical (OPEN) position.
2.2. Draining of moisture from AC- Reservoir
2.3. Preventing air leakage from un-loader valves and non-return-valves( CV & AC CV)

3. Preventive Action:
In order to avoid such failures in 3-phase locos ( WAP5/WAP7/WAG9),following steps are to
be taken :

Front of Pneumatic Panel Right Side of Pneumatic Panel

3.1. Ensure KABA Key (IG 38) is kept in vertical(OPEN) position.

3.2. Open drain cock provided at right side of pneumatic panel to drain moisture from AC-
Reservoir. After draining the moisture, close the cock.
3.3. Tap non-return-valves – “ACCV” and “CV”(provided in pneumatic panel) two to three
times
3.4. Operate “ULV COC” (provided in pneumatic panel) to isolate un-loader valves. Once
the auxiliary pressure is maintained, panto is raised, VCB is closed and MR reaches
more than 8.0 Kg/cm2, operate “ULV COC” to normal position to put back un-loader
valves into service.

All LPs must be counselled immediately, and a feedback for the same may please be given to
HQ/TLC on daily basis.
