ACTIVITY SHEET #3: Determining Issues in Texts

GEAR UP
MELC: Determine various social, moral and economic issues discussed in the text listened to.

After the learners have finished answering this activity sheet, they will be able to:
1. define what is a social, moral, and economic issue;
2. use critical listening in determining various social, moral, and economic issues; and
3. identify the social, moral, and economic issues discussed in the text listened to.

ENGAGE
Determining Issues in a Text Listened To
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages. It is a focused, concentrated
approach to understanding the message in a text. One type of listening is critical listening.
Critical listening entails listening with the goal of analyzing or evaluating a message based on information
presented verbally and information that can be inferred from context. A critical listener evaluates a message
and accepts it, rejects it, or decides to withhold judgment and seek more information. Using critical listening,
you will be able to determine the different issues in a text listened to such as social, moral, and economic
issues.
Social Issue
A social issue is a problem that affects the quality of life of many people in a society brought about by factors
beyond an individual’s control. It is a source of conflicting opinion for many because different societies have
different perceptions and what may be "normal" behavior in one society may be a significant social issue in
another society. It is usually recognized by many as a condition or behavior that needs to be addressed.
Examples: poverty, drugs, corruption, crab & colonial mentality, unemployment, overpopulation, child
labor, inadequate health care service, terrorism, prostitution, pollution, malnutrition
Moral Issue
Morality refers to the set of standards that enable people to live cooperatively in groups. It is what societies
determine to be “right” and “acceptable.” A moral issue is an issue that concerns ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ as well as
your own values, your beliefs, feelings, and leanings. It includes those actions which have the potential to help
or harm others or ourselves.
Examples: abortion, extra-marital affairs, gambling, pre-marital sex, divorce, homosexuality, drinking
alcohol, extrajudicial killings, death penalty, same-sex marriage
Economic Issues
Economic issues are problems that stops a nation from growing or developing. It is concerned with the
production of goods and services to satisfy the unlimited wants of the economy through the utilization of scarce
resources. It becomes a problem because although the needs and wants of people are endless, the resources
available to satisfy needs and wants are limited.
Examples: high population growth, unequal distribution of wealth, poor performance of agricultural
sector, unemployment, minimum wage, poverty, corruption, lack of education

Some social issues come from moral issues because people have different opinions on what they think
and feel should be a “morally” just personal life or social order. For example, being a homosexual (LGBT) may
be a moral issue but when homosexuals are discriminated in the society, it becomes a social issue.
On the other hand, some social issues are also connected to economic issue because they affect the
growth or development of economy. For example, unemployment is both a social and economic issue because
when people do not have jobs, they will not have enough money to buy the things they need and live well,
which is a social issue. When these people cannot buy, then consumer spending, which is one of an economy’s
key drivers of growth, goes down, leading to a recession or even a depression when left unaddressed.

Here's the transcript of Catriona's final message as Miss Universe:

I have always believed that as women, we have the power to redefine our generation. When we raise our
voices together, the words "women power" become more than just a phrase – they become a movement. I
wanted my reign to be a year with purpose. From advocating for quality education for all to raising awareness
for HIV/AIDs, I have strived to use my voice for good.
Thank you to mom and dad for always believing in me, to Paula and Esther for your mentorship, the Miss
Universe organization, and to team Catriona, thank you from the bottom of my heart. And to my beloved
Philippines, isang [karangalan] po ito. You endlessly inspire me and give me hope. Maraming salamat sa
inyong lahat. Above all, thank you God. I lift everything up to glorify and honor you.
As I close this chapter, I do so with a grateful heart. To everyone with a dream, know that your dreams are
valid, and on your path you are never denied, and only redirected.
