Chapter 1
INTRODUCTION
India is a highly agriculture dominant economy, where agriculture
contributes close of 16% of total GDP. In such an economy sugarcane
plays a very pivotal role as it is the second highest cultivated crop behind
cotton. Globally India is the second largest producer of sugar just behind
Brazil. Due to favourable climatic conditions for cultivating sugarcane
there is ample supply of sugarcane. Though the global as well as
domestic sugar production is going up year after year, both global as well
as domestic demand vis-a-vi consumption of sugar has stagnated. In such
a scenario the market price of sugar is bound to go down consequently
the sugar cane price will also come down.
In order to protect farmers from this the government announces Fair and
Remunerative Price for purchase of sugarcane which is the minimum
statutory level of price to be paid by the mills to procure sugarcane.
However, due to cut throat competition among sugar mills to procure
higher quantity of good quality sugarcane, the mils end up announcing
additional prices which is far above the Fair and Remunerative Price.
This affects overall profitability of the mills.
The excess supply of sugar over demand has caused the sugar price to
plummet. To make sugar production business commercially viable, the
Central Government has announced Minimum Selling: Price for Sugar
at Rs. 31.00 per kg. Though this has helped the industry to some extent,
for survival of the sugar mills in the long run the government needs to
hike the Minimum Selling Price.
The government is also encouraging sugar mills to divert more and more
sugarcane towards production of ethanol. In the normal sugar season,
about 320 LMT of sugar is produced against domestic consumption of
260 LMT. This 60 LMT of surplus sugar which remains unsold, blocks
funds of sugar mills to the tune of about Rs, 19,000 crore every year
thereby affecting liquidity positions of sugar mills resulting in
accumulation of cane price arrears of farmers. To deal with surplus
stocks of sugar, sugar-mills are being encouraged by the Government to
export sugar, for which Government has been extending financial
assistance.

Chapter-2
SUGAR INDUSTRY PROFILE
2.1 Production
Currently, about 110 countries produce sugar from either cane or
beet, and eight countries produce sugar from both cane and beet.
Sugarcane, on average, accounts for nearly 80% of global sugar
production. Last October/September season the top ten producing
countries (India, Brazil, Thailand, China, the US, Mexico, Russia,
Pakistan, France, Australia) accounted for nearly 70% of global output.
Sugar has been produced in India since ancient times and then it spread
to other parts of the world. Sugarcane is a native of tropical Indian
subcontinent and Southeast Asia. In India, sugarcane is planted thrice a
year in October, March and July depending on part of the country. Most
of the sugar production in India takes at local Cooperative Sugar
mills. After gaining Independence, India made serious plans for overall
industrial development of sugar industry.
Sugar industry is a big business in India. Around 503 mills produced
more than 31 million tonnes of sugar in the last crushing season, which
lasted from October to April. This makes it the world's second largest
producer, Next to Brazil(41.8 million tons). Some 50 million farmers and
millions of more workers, are involved in sugarcane farming. India is the
world's largest consumer of sugar. According to data from the Indian
Sugar Mills Association, the country's sugar mill produce
268.21 lakh (26,821,000) tonnes of sugar between October 1, 2019 and
May 31, 2020.
Uttar Pradesh, the leading sugarcane producing State in the country,
sugar production in U.P. in 2020-21 SS is estimated to be around 124.57
lakh tonnes by 120 sugar mills, as against 126.37 lakh tonnes produced
in the 2019-20 SS.
Sugar production in Karnataka is estimated to be around 108.02 lakh
tonnes in 2020-21 SS , as against 61.68 lakh tonnes produced in 2019-
20 SS by 65 active sugar industries out of 81 total industries, i.e. higher
by about 46.34 lakh tonnes. Also, due to timely and adequate rainfall,
sugarcane area in Karnataka has also increased in 2020-21 SS. Area
under sugarcane in 2020-21 SS is expected to be about 5.01 lakh ha as
2|P a ge

against 4.20 lakh ha. The Sugar Industry in Karnataka has around 71
sugar factories which are distributed all over the state.
long-term solution to deal with surplus sugar, to improve sustainability
of sugar industry and to ensure timely payment of cane dues to farmers,
Government has been encouraging diversion of excess sugarcane &
sugar to ethanol for supplying to Oil Marketing Companies for blending
with petrol which not only would reduce import dependency on crude
oil, promote ethanol as a fuel which is indigenous & non-polluting. but
will also enhance income of sugarcane farmers. In order to achieve this,
one of the very key policy measures announced by the Central
Government is Ethanol Blending Programme. Under this programme the
government has permitted the oil Marketing Companies to blend ethanol
to the extent of 10% with petroleum products Currently MOCs have
achieved only 5% blending Also the government has announced a better
price for ethanol produced from B-heavy molasses. These factors have
created high demand for molasses which in turn is yielding high prices
for B-heavy molasses. This will improve the sugar mills in terms of
financial profitability and liquidity.
2.2 Consumption
Between 2001 and 2018, world sugar consumption increased from
123.454 mln tons to 172.441 mln tons, the equivalent to an average
annual growth of 2.01%. However, the second half of the current decade
has seen a considerable deceleration in world sugar consumption growth
to less than 0.84% per annum (average for 2016-2018), while no growth
has been for 2018. Major sugar consuming markets include India, the
EU, China, Brazil, the US, Indonesia, Russia, Pakistan, Mexico and
Egypt. One of the threats for sugar industry is negative publicity for
sugar based confectionery items in the recent times. Though this is bound
to affect the demand for sugar, this is compensated by increase in Indian
and global population.

Manufacturing Process
6.1 The cane preparation process described as follows
The sugar cane is used as input or the source of production to the
factory and the white crystal Exportable sugar is main output or the
factory production along with the by-products such as bagasse, final
molasses and filter cake.
The exportable sugar grades are M30, S1-30 & S2-30.
The water heated in co-generation plant is used to extract the juice in the
mills.
The sugar cane of required varieties is received from cane yard through
sources such as tractors (70%) Lorries (20%) and bullock carts (05%),
but now-a-Days bullock carts are minimized.
6.2 Introduction to cane handling and juice extraction process
6.2.1 Cane weighment
The cane is weighed on electronic Weighment systems called
weigh bridges that basically uses electronic load cell system. Cane
Weighment system is very essential step for making cane payment to the
formers and for Chemical control.
6.2.2 Cane handling
Unloading- Cane Unload device called crane is used for lifting &
unloading device. These lifts and transports the cane from the tractor
trailer &truck and feeds it on the feeder table.
Feeding- Feeder table is the large table which is used for Uniform
(regulation) feeding of the cane to the cane carrier. It is located at the
right angle to cane carrier.
Cane Movement- The function of a moving apron type cane carrier is
to convey sugar cane from the feeder table to the mill house through the
set of cane preparatory device called Kicker, Chopper and Fibrizer.
6.2.3 Cane preparation
Levelling- Cane Leveller is installed on the cane carrier to prevent
excessive cane being fed to cane chopper which causes jamming in the
arrangement.
9|P a ge
Billuru Gurubaasav Mahaswamiji Institute Of Technolgy, Mudhol
Cutting- Chopper is installed next to the Kicker and the cane carrier
itself and it cuts/chops the hard rind cane& breaks the too short pieces
which will increase the mill efficiency. Fibrizer cuts the cane to very
small pieces it breaks the cells without extraction the juice. The Fibrizer
in the cane preparatory device station helps to improve the mall
extraction.
6.2.4 Juice extraction
The mill house extracts juice from the prepared cane with
squeezing & pressing operation, it is called milling operation. The
disintegrated cane is fed into first mill of milling tanker the subsequent
mills performs the function of extraction of juice from bagasse sucked in
water. The mixture of primary juice & secondary juice is screened
through a DSM Screen.
Primary juice: The juice extracted from the first mill is called primary
juice.
Last expressed juice: the juice expressed by the last mill is called last
expressed juice.
Secondary juice: The juice expressed by the last mill is recycled for
penultimate & so on. finally, the juice extracted by the 2nd mill is called
secondary juice.
6.2.5 Imbibition
The process of adding of hot water around temperature of 800C
to extract the remaining juice present in the pre-extracted Bagasse is
called imbibition. This process is carried between last 2 mills. The
imbibition helps to maintain the Pol% Bagasse and Brix% juice.
6.2.6 Rotary screen
Rotary screen is installed above the mill surface level in the mill
house itself. The rotary screen filters mixed juice that separates the fine
Bagasse particles called Cush-Cush from the mixed juice.

Conclusion
SPSCL, Siddapur is well managed factory earning profits, the
overall study shows that the factory is maintaining high levels of
inventory system. The cyclic nature of the industry significantly impacts
the operating performance and cash flow generation of the company.
Both the raw material prices and distribution of end products(sugar) are
regulated by the governmet.in addition to this, sale and distribution of
by-products (molasses and power) also are regulated at different levels
in different states. Along with this the company is trying to increase its
efficiency in managing fund. this I came to know by analysing different
types of ratios.
Thus, the study indicates that the SPSCL, Siddapur is functioning
very well and trying to adopt new techniques in-order-to increase its
efficiency in the management.
