A. Introduction People have always been fascinated with volcanoes and their burning display of nature’s
power. Despite the fact that it could bring damage to humans, animals, and properties. A
volcanic eruption has also advantages and one of those is providing energy resources. This
form of energy that comes from Earth’s internal heat is called geothermal energy.
What’s new? (START UP)
Earth’s geothermal energy has benefited humans for centuries. By drilling wells deep
underground to bring hot water to the surface, the hot water is then used to generate
electricity. This type of energy source is renewable because water is naturally replenished
through rainfall, while heat is continuously produced by the earth.
Trivia Time: Did you know that the Philippines is the world's third largest producer of
geothermal energy? This thermal energy is used to generate electricity.
In fact, the country is home to three of the top ten biggest geothermal power plants in the
world which are: the Makban Geothermal Complex in Batangas that produces 458 MW
output capacity; the Tiwi Geothermal Complex in the province of Albay with a net capacity
of 289 MW; and the Maltibog Geothermal Power Station in Leyte island with 232.5 MW
capacity.

A. Dry steam power plant C. Flash steam power plant
B. Direct use D. Binary cycle power plant
Geothermal energy is a form of energy that comes from Earth’s internal heat. This kind of
energy is considered renewable.
● It comes from the word "Geo" means "from the earth," and "thermal" means
"heat," so this type of energy is found under the earth.
● Geothermal energy is found along major plate boundaries where earthquakes and
volcanoes are concentrated such as the Pacific Ring of Fire.
● It is safer than other energy sources. Unlike other fossil fuel plants, geothermal
power plants do not produce greenhouse gases that are harmful to the environment.
● Most geothermal reservoirs are located in volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers.
● Geothermal energy can be harnessed from the Earth’s natural heat. Unlike other
power plants that use fuel to heat water into steam, in geothermal power plants, the steam
is heated by the Earth.
● Steam, heat, or hot water from geothermal reservoirs provides the force that spins
the turbine that is connected to a generator which converts mechanical energy into
electricity.
A production well is drilled. Hot water evaporates from those wells in the form of steam.
The vapor makes the turbine rotate, a turbine is connected to a generator. The generator
converts mechanical energy to electricity. A cooling tower condenses water vapor to cold
water. Cold water is then sent back to the reservoir. It will be heated again, and the cycle
starts again.
There are three main ways to harness and use geothermal energy.
1. Geothermal heat pumps – uses the heat coming from close to the Earth’
Advantages
● No fuel needed – during the production and use of energy, no fuel is used at all.
Therefore, it does not emit harmful chemicals into the atmosphere in producing
electricity.
● Environment friendly – geothermal power plants have one of the lowest carbon
footprint and minimal environmental impact.
● High reliability -geothermal energy is always available, 365 days a year. It resists
interruption of power generation since the source of power is naturally and
abundantly available.
Disadvantages
● Location dependent – geothermal power plant can only be built in certain locations
● Possible pollution – drilling processes on Earth’s crust may release some poisonous
gas and minerals that may cause harm to people and environment. However, the
amount of gas released is significantly lower than in the case of fossil fuels.
Direction: Copy the diagram on a clean sheet of paper and label how this type of
energy works. Choose your answer below. Write letter only.
A. The water reaches the surface, the pressure dropped causes the water to turn
into steam.
B. Under high pressure, hot water is pumped from deep underground through a
well.
C. The steam spins a turbine that drives the generator that produces electricity.
D. The cooled water is pumped back into the earth to begin the process again.
E. The steam cools off in a cooling tower and condenses back to water.
2. Is the Philippines has the potential to be the number one producer of geothermal
energy? Why or Why not?
Direction: Create a poster that will demonstrate your understanding of geothermal energy.
Geothermal energy is a form of energy that comes from Earth’s internal heat. This
kind of energy is considered renewable. Geothermal energy is found along major plate
boundaries where earthquakes and volcanoes are concentrated such as the Pacific Ring of
Fire. It is safer than other energy sources. Unlike other fossil fuel plants, geothermal power
plants do not produce greenhouse gases that are harmful to the environment. Most
geothermal reservoirs are located in volcanoes, hot springs, and geysers.
Earth’s geothermal energy has benefited humans for centuries. By drilling wells deep
underground to bring hot water to the surface, the hot water is then used to generate
electricity.
This type of energy source is renewable because water is naturally replenished through
rainfall, while heat is continuously produced by the earth.
The Philippines is one of the top producers of geothermal energy. Currently, our country has
seven geothermal fields which supply about 12 percent of the nation’s energy.
