1 Scope
This specification together with Buyer's Quotation Request or purchase order and
Specification Sheet(s) 8020-611-ENG define the minimum technical requirements for
conventional and balanced type industrial safety relief valves.
API STD 526 is modified, as indicated in this specification, to cover requirements for
pressure relief valves that have threaded connections.
The following paragraph numbers refer to API STD 526, Fifth Edition, June 2002,
which is a part of this specification. The text in each paragraph below is an addition,
exception, modification, or deletion to API STD 526 as noted. Paragraph numbers not
appearing in API STD 526 are new paragraphs to be inserted in numerical order.
Material or equipment supplied to this specification shall comply with the latest
edition of the references listed below unless otherwise noted.

Any conflicts between this specification and other applicable Saudi Aramco
Materials System Specifications (SAMSSs), Engineering Standards (SAESs),
Standard Drawings (SASDs), or industry standards, codes, and forms shall be
resolved in writing by the Company or Buyer's Representative through the
Manager, Process & Control Systems Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
Direct all requests to deviate from this specification in writing to the Company or
Buyer's Representative, who shall follow internal company procedure SAEP-302
and forward such requests to the Manager, Process & Control Systems
Department of Saudi Aramco, Dhahran.
2 Design
All safety relief valves specified by this SAMSS shall be designed and
manufactured and tested in accordance with the ASME Boiler and Pressure
Vessel Code and shall carry the appropriate stamp, including those for liquid
services.

Pressure temperature limits for threaded pressure relief valves shall be specified
by the manufacturer.
Bonnet caps shall be drilled and tapped 3 8 thread per ANSI B1.20.1. A solid
steel plug shall be inserted prior to shipment.
3 Material
In sour service all wetted parts, welds and heat affected zones of welds exposed
to corrosive components shall meet the hardness and heat treatment
requirements as specified in SAES-A-301. This includes material under
overlays, platings or coatings.
Spring materials shall be per manufacturers standard and shall be suitable for the
intended service.
When SAES-A-301 is specified in the Purchase Order, the manufacturer shall conduct
hardness tests on all wetted parts in accordance with ASTM E10 or ASTM E18.
Manufacturer shall conduct tests on a production sampling basis on all affected
components or produce test documentation to certify the base material has been tested.

Components or base metal shall be tested on a heat lot basis. Test results shall be
traceable to Purchase Order line items.
Steam Service
Safety relief valves specified for steam service shall be subject to a seat leakage
test in accordance with ASME SEC VIII D1, Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code,
UG-136 (d).
Non-steam Service
Safety relief valves specified for non-steam service shall be subject to a seat
leakage test in accordance with API STD 527 "Commercial Seat Tightness of
Safety Relief Valves with Metal-to-Metal Seats".
This test shall be conducted in accordance with ASME SEC VIII D1, Boiler and
Pressure Vessel Code, UG-136 (d) (2,3). The "design pressure of the parts" in
UG-136 (d) (2) shall mean vendor's maximum design pressure for the subject
valve (NOT SET PRESSURE of SUBJECT VALVE).
Visual inspection and physical check shall be made when so specified in the
Purchase Order:
a) Compliance with the purchase order description, relevant specifications,
paint description, certified drawings and Vendor's catalog description as
applicable.
b) Verification of the identification name plate for compliance with the data
of Appendix B.
c) Verification of satisfactory workmanship, material, components,
dimensions and freedom from surface defects.
Production tests shall comply with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code
Requirements.
When so specified on the Purchase Order, 30%, with a minimum of one, of the
total number of valves ordered shall be selected for a repetition of the Vendor's

(set) pressure and leakage tests and shall produce a record which should
duplicate the original test result. If the recheck of one or more valves does not
satisfy the inspector, then all the valves ordered must be rechecked in the
presence of the inspector.
5 Shipment (Addition)
Export packing, marking and shipping shall be in accordance with the requirements of
the Purchase Order.
Threaded openings shall be plugged with suitable protective devices. Temporary plugs
should be readily distinguishable from permanent metal plugs.
Inlet and outlet flanges shall be protected to prevent damage from or entrance of foreign
material during shipment.
