1. Introduction, Purpose and Scope

Project – South Commuter Railway Project: Package CP S – 03a and CP S – 03c
Contractor – Northern Builders

The objective of this method statement is to define the rules and conditions design to
ensure that the installation of sheet piles is planned to enable personnel to be aware of all the
procedures and dangers involved and to decide the safest method of work. The methodology will be
modified in the event that the soil condition varies or actual site conditions change. Northern
Builders will remain accountable to ensure compliance with all work and safety measures as stated
in this method statement.

The Scope of work shall consist of the installation of Sheet Piles in accordance with the
specifications in the contract documents. This includes:

2. Organization
2.1. Key Personnel and Responsibility
 Project Manager - Oversees the works and assists the Construction Manager in the
planning and control of the project from inception to completion to meet the
project requirements and at the same ensures that the project is completed on time,
within the budget and to the required quality standards for the satisfaction of the
employer.
 Project – in – Charge - Directly reports to the Project Manager and supervises all
operational aspects of site construction and ensures that all operations personnel
achieve planned production in conformity with safety, quality and environmental
requirements.
 Site Engineer - The Site Engineer is responsible for coordination and supervision of
technical aspects of work including solving technical issues providing advice,
management and preparing reports.

 QA/QC Head - Responsible for the overall implementation of the Construction

Quality Management Plan and ensure proper documentation and compliance to the
project’s quality requirement.
 QC Engineer - Responsible for the Quality of Work at site, conducts Material and
Work Inspection. Directly reports to the QA/QC Head. Report non-conformities and
liaise with client during Joint Inspection.
 HSE Manager - The HSE Manager shall review the safe work as planned work permit
prior to start of the work and must be implemented and observed during
construction.
 Safety Engineer/Officer - He is responsible for the safety of the workforce. Identifies
hazards at construction sites to prevent any untoward Incidents or Accidents.

4.2. Preparation Works

 Prior to the installation of Sheet Pile, all manpower and equipment shall be mobilized at
site based on approved Construction Schedule, Manpower Mobilization Plan and
Equipment Mobilization Plan.
 The preparation of area for the entire Project shall be cleared to give way for other
construction works.
 Site – barricade shall be put in place to secure the working area and avoid unauthorized
persons from entering the job site.
 Working access and area shall be wide enough for this type of work including swing
operation.

 The site shall be levelled to allow safe operation of heavy machinery.

 Steel plates shall be provided at locations where the ground is soft and unable to
support the machinery.
 Fabrication and stocking of material such as sheet piles and other work - related material
shall be within the project limits. Exact location will be subject to site constraints.
 Prior to the commencement of site works, survey shall be carried out to confirm the
existing area over sheet piling locations and the condition of the existing environment.

4.3. Survey Works

 The locations, markings and alignments shall be prepared to control the straightness and
verticality of the position.
 Center of sheet pile shall be located by the surveyor. Appropriate reference line and
offset point to the center of piles to be set out.
 As the alignment was surveyed and the stakes and markings are placed, regular checking
of elevation and alignment of sheet pile should be done.

4.4. Fabrication of Sheet Pile with Splicing

 Before commencing any piling operation, sheet piles shall be delivered on site and as per
the design specification shown in the drawings for construction. It shall be checked and
approved by the QA/QC Engineers.
 Two pieces of sheet pile shall be selected, lifted, and placed at the designated location
for jointing in welds.
 Welders shall prepare and grind one of the edges of sheet piles until it becomes a
beveled edge.
 After that, both ends of sheet piles shall be put together, merged and jointed as per
welding details shown in the drawings.
 Sheet pile shall be left for cooling down of 3 hours minimum before lifting. Then the
lifting team shall rig the sheet pile properly and carefully and flip it over.
 Welding shall be carried out at another side of the sheet pile joint.

4.5. Pile Guide Installation

 A pile guide shall be installed so that the installed sheet pile will not be misaligned.
 Two I – Beams will be used to guide and correct the pile verticality and position. Pile
guide must be thoroughly welded into the sheet pile to maximize its use and
effectiveness and hold the driven piles with each other.

4.6. Sheet Pile Driving (Auger Method)

 Auger shall be used to drill through stiff soil and breaks up the ground effectively.
 The auger is then wound out of the ground leaving the soil in place. It then simply moves
down the proposed sheet pile line.
 Backhoe mounted with vibro - hammer shall be used to install the sheet piles.

4.7. Sheet Pile Driving (Vibro Hammer Method)

 The piles shall be arranged at each point with the use of pile guide to ease installation
process.
 A cable shall be put into the sheet pile that will act as a Secondary support.
 After establishing the positions and alignments of sheet piles, it shall be lifted using
backhoe with vibro - hammer and drives it into the ground with assistance from a
spotter.
 A level shall be used in checking the verticality of the sheet pile and driving of piles will
continue until the desired depth is attained.
 The vibro - hammer drives the second sheet pile into the ground and the second sheet
pile interlocks with the first sheet pile.
 To secure the hold of driven piles with each other, the interlockings of piles above the
ground level will be welded.
 Process repeats till the installation of sheet piles is completed.

4.8. Inspection
 The alignment and verticality of the sheet pile shall be regularly checked as the
installation goes to avoid misalignment.

4.9. Extraction of Sheet Pile

 After backfilling or completion of a permanent structure, the backhoe with vibro –
hammer shall be brought in. It will clamp the sheet pile and the vibration force induced
by hammer will reduce the cohesion of soil and start to pull out sheet piles.
 The same procedure shall be repeated until each sheet pile is lifted up.
 The Engineer shall ensure that vibration limits are not exceeded during sheet pile
extraction by using vibration method to not cause damage in the structure.
 All extracted sheet piles and materials shall be maintained its quality for it will be used
for other sheet piling works.

5. Quality
5.1. Monitoring

Inspection (IRF) shall be raised for the activities where the participation of the
Engineer/other stakeholders is required according to intervention points. All the monitoring from
quality team before executing the work shall ensure that all the requirements and standards are met
and complied. Northern Builders QC Engineer to conduct internal inspection and after verifying the
work is completely done. Sub - Contractor raise IRF to the Main Contractor and further the Main
Contractor send to consultant for inspection. Northern Builders will conduct internal inspection and
after verifying the work.

5.2. Monitoring of Equipment

All equipment should be calibrated once a year as per manufacturer standards/requirement.
These should be checked and recorded by the unit components manufacturer.

5.3. Inspection and Test Plan

The works shall be progressively inspected and tested to ensure that specified contract and
authority requirements are met and verified. Inspection shall be raised to the Engineer for allowing
inspections and witnessing of works carried out. All inspection requests will be raised with 24-hour
prior notice to the Site Engineer. Northern Builders QC Engineer to conduct internal inspection and
after verifying the work is completely done. Sub - Contractor raise IRF to the Main Contractor and
further Main Contractor send to consultant for inspection All records of inspections shall be made
available for review by The Engineer.
