2.1 Polyester-Melamine Coil Coating Primer

SHIELDEX® C 303 is a high performance non toxic heavy metal free, anti-corrosive pigment
specially designed to replace Strontium Chromate in coil coating primers.

Formulation Details
Dynapol L205 and Dynapol L208 are high molecular weight polyester resins widely used in coil
coating primer applications for both building and domestic appliance applications. Cymel 350 is
a typical melamine based crosslinker. The cure reponse within this formulation was controlled by the
use of Silane A187 (Silane Ester), Epoxy blocked Phosphoric acid (co-catalyst), EDBSA (sulphonic
acid co-catalyst) and Halox 650 (Dicarboxylic acid). These components prevent the interaction of
SHIELDEX® with the acid catalysts and any acidic functionality on the resins, thus ensuring maximum
cure response.
Application and Cure Conditions
This formulation was tested over galvanised steel test panels pretreated with Bonder 1303 (ex Chemtall)
or Granodine C 108 (ex Henkel). Application was by bar coater to a dry film thickness of 5 – 7 microns.
Cure was to a peak metal temperature (PMT) of 216 – 224 °C. A polyester-melamine topcoat was applied
to a dry film thickness of 20 – 25 microns and the whole system stoved again to a PMT of 232 – 241 °C.

Test Results
This formulation when tested on Bonder 1303 (ex Chemetall) and Granodine C 108 (ex Henkel)
treated galvanised steel test panels gave equivalent anti-corrosive and adhesion performance to
a commercial Strontium Chromate containing primer after 1000 hours Hot Salt spray testing
(ASTM B 117). See test panel photographs above. The storage stability of this SHIELDEX® C 303
containing primer was found to be acceptable as measured by MEK resistance of the stored primer.
