Problem Solving Involving System of Linear Inequalities in Two Variables

This document provides a semi-detailed lesson plan on problem solving involving systems of linear inequalities in two variables. The objectives are for students to be able to identify regions representing solutions to systems of inequalities on graphs, sketch graphs representing systems, and identify systems represented by graphs. The lesson plan outlines prerequisites, exclusions, topics, materials, procedures including an opening, lesson content on defining systems of inequalities and providing examples, and an evaluation with practice problems.

PROBLEM SOLVING

INVOLVING SYSTEM
OF LINEAR
INEQUALITIES IN TWO
VARIABLES
(SEMI- DETAILED LESSON PLAN)

Karen KC R. Pineda
BSED MATH 3A
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students are expected to be able to;
 identify the regions on a graph that represent the solution to a system
of inequalities,
 sketch a graph to represent a system of linear inequalities in order to
solve them,
 identify the system of linear inequalities represented by a graph.
A. Prerequisites
Students should already be familiar with
 linear inequalities,
 graphing linear inequalities.
B. Exclusions
Students will not cover
 applications on systems of linear inequalities,
 systems including anything other than two-variable inequalities

II. Subject matter

a. Topic: Problem solving involving system of linear inequalities in two

variables

c. Materials : power point presentation, Printed materials, Chalk and

blackboard

III. Procedure

i. Preliminaries;

a. Opening Prayer
b. greetings
c. Checking of Attendance/Reminders for Online Class
Etiquette
d. Review / motivation
 Teacher will ask what topic all about our last lesson is
and give some examples.
 A "mistakes are okay" class culture It's one thing to say that
mistakes are okay. But effective teachers also show students
how "wrong" answers are actually just clues to solving a
puzzle

ii. Developmental Activity

a. Presentation of the Lesson
The teacher will use one example from the previous activity and ask
the students the following questions

 State the system of inequalities whose solution is presented by

the shown graph
 Which regions on the graph contain solutions that satisfy both
of the inequalities
b. Lesson proper
The teacher will:

A system of inequalities (expressed by <,≤,>,and ≥) is a collection of two

or more linear inequalities in multiple variables that are utilized when a
problem necessitates a variety of solutions and there are several
constraints on those solutions. Because the line itself is not included in
the region indicating the inequality, inequalities of the type > or will be
shown as a vertical dashed line at = (parallel to the -axis), and the shaded
region will be either on the right, for >, or on the left, for. The same
would be true for or, with the exception that the region would now
contain the line =, which would be represented by a solid line, but the
shading direction would remain the same.

Example; Miguel can spend at most php. 30.00 for his food during
recess. It cost php. 10.00 for snacks and php. 5.00 for any drinks. How
many possible combination of snacks and drinks can be bought?

Let x be the number of snacks

Let y be the number of any drinks

Equation: 10x+5y ≤ 30

x- intercept set y=o y- intercepts set x=0

10x+5y ≤ 30 10x+5y ≤ 30
10x+5(0)=30 10(0)+5y = 30
10x = 30 5y = 30
x=3 (3,0) y = 6 (0,6)
Test point :
x y
Origin (0,0)
10x+5y ≤ 30
10(0)+5(0)≤ 30
0≤ 30 true

Example : Anita works as a online tutor for $$4 per hour. She also works as a editor
for $$7 per hour. She is only allowed to work 15 hours per week. She wants to make
at most $$75. Graph a system of inequalities to represent this situation and write at
least two solutions.
Let works as a online tutor = x and as an editor be y.
4x + 7y ≤ 75
x + y ≤15

The center graph represents the intersecting region.

The coordinates (2,4) and (6,6) satisfies the inequalities.
Check : (2,4) ⇒ 2(4) + 7(4) = 36 ≤ 74
2 + 4 = 6 ≤ 15
And (6,6) ⇒ 2(6) + 7(6) = 57 ≤≤ 74
6 + 6 = 12 ≤15
Example 2: Determining the System of Inequalities Represented by a Given Graph

State the system of inequalities whose solution is represented by the

following graph.
Answer

The shaded area represents all non negative values of  and ,which can be
translated to the inequalities≥0,≥0.

In order to see this, let’s consider each inequality separately and see where
they overlap. ≥0,which is all non negative values of  including the -axis, is
shaded in the first and fourth quadrants.

Similarly, ≥0,which is all nonnegative values of  including the -axis, is

shaded in the first and second quadrants.
The region where both inequalities overlap is in the first quadrant,
represented by where the shaded regions of each inequality overlap.

The overlapping region is exactly the solution represented by the graph

given.
C. Generalization
I have learned that
 Wang Hao wants to spend at most \$15$15dollar sign, 15 on dairy products.
Each liter of goat milk costs \$2.40$2.40dollar sign, 2, point, 40, and each
liter of cow's milk costs \$1.20$1.20dollar sign, 1, point, 20.
Write an inequality that represents the number of liters of goat milk (G)(G)left
parenthesis, G, right parenthesis and cow's milk (C)(C)left parenthesis, C,
right parenthesis Wang Hao can buy on his budget.

IV. Evaluation

Solve the following problems:

1. Arthur needs to buy fruits. A mango cost php. 20.00 each

while a guava php. 15.00 each. He can spend no more than
php.180.00. the total number of is not exceed to 8.
2. Angeline has a bread house for business. It cost a bakery php.
15.00 to make a loaf bread and php. 30.00 to make a pineapple
pie production cost on these item cannot exceed php. 300.00.
there must be at least 15 of these item.

V. Assignment
The teacher will ask the students to more about two variab
