LTE design modified by software update and additional features. Overhead reduction for optimal resources utilization and processing power optimization Elimination of some LTE DL control channels: PDCCH, PCFICH and PHICH. MPDCCH introduced in Rel 11. For devices in poor coverage, power spectral density (PSD) boosting and repetition can be used in UL and DL.

• ‘In-band’ utilizing resource blocks
within a normal LTE carrier and shares some HW and SW resources with host LTE cell. • ‘Stand-alone’ utilizing for example the spectrum currently being used by GERAN systems as a replacement of one or more GSM carriers, or as a brand new cell without resource sharing with other legacy LTE cells. • ‘Guard band’ utilizing the unused resource blocks within a LTE carrier’s guard-band. • LTE-M is always using in-band operation.

❖ Several design choices have been made to enable low-complexity
UE implementation ✓ Low sampling rate due to lower UE bandwidth ✓ Significantly reduced transport block sizes for both downlink and uplink ✓ A UE only requires single antenna ✓ Allow only half-duplex frequency-division duplexing (HD-FDD) operation ✓ Reduced transmit power (20 dBm) ❖ And specifically for NB-IoT ✓ No need for a turbo decoder at the UE since turbo coding is only used in uplink ✓ No Connected mode mobility measurement is required. A UE only needs to perform mobility measurement during the Idle mode ✓ No parallel processing is required. All the physical layer procedures and transmission and reception of physical channels occur in sequential manner.

Main features to enhance the coverage are the following
❖ Repetitions of transmissions on the physical layer. ✓ Number of repetitions depends on UE coverage. Works in both uplink and downlink. ❖ Downlink power boosting is possible due to the narrow-band nature of the signal. ✓ The PRBs containing the IoT signals can be boosted 6 dB (NB-IoT) or 3 dB (LTE-M) compared to legacy LTE PRBs ❖ Use of narrowband transmissions allows the device to concentrate all the transmit power in a few PRBs. ✓ Especially NB-IoT benefits from this: ”single-tone” (15 kHz or even 3.75 kHz) is possible ❖ Note that these features also need to compensate for the low UE output power and single UE antenna
