August 19, 1920 in the highlands of Lubuagan in the province of Kalinga. She grew up
in a devout household. Her father was a well-known Cordilleran
missionary.Magdalena was a 22-year-old teacher in her village preparing to be a nun
when the war broke out in 1941. When the Japanese Imperial Army arrived in
Northern Luzon and began their invasion, this was quickly interrupted.
She was imprisoned in Camp Holmes for five months alongside the spouses of
missionaries and other officers after refusing to surrender following the Fall of
Bataan. During this time, she learned to speak Niponggo, a Japanese language. She
had no idea how important this "learning" would be in the coming months.
After meeting Colonel Russel Volckman of the United States Armed Forces in the
Philippines-North Luzon, she chose to become a special agent (USAFIP-NL). She was
able to transport “important intelligence data, crucial radio components, and
medical supplies” across Japanese-held territories because to her church
connections and Niponggo-speaking abilities.
Magdalena became the first Asian woman to win the Silver Star Medal, the third
highest military medal for valor bestowed for "gallantry in battle against an enemy of
the United States."
