them.

LESSON 1: Prehistoric Age

• During prehistoric time,
life was simple
compared to how we
live now, the concern of
the members of the
community were food,
water, shelter,
reproduction, and safety
from natural
occurrences and wild
animals. That was the
period
when the medium of communication was through oral language
primarily.
• Each group, or each tribe devised their own language to be
able to communicate with each other. Communication was
limited to a specific group only. Early people developed the
sounds to make meaningful messages to one another. The
members of the group agreed what a sound would mean.
• In this age people also discovered fire, developed paper from
plants, and forged weapons and tools with stone, bronze,
copper and iron.

18th century, was marked by the shift from agricultural and handicraft
economy to one dominated by machines and machine manufacturers. The
industrial age marked the use of iron steel and there was an increase in the
application of science in the industry.
• The primary industries like agriculture, fishing, mining, forestry, extraction

of minerals used the different discoveries in science.

• The manufacturing industry was the secondary industry that was

developed. Different produced from processed goods. Energy producing
industries and construction industry were fully utilized.
5

• A tertiary industry was developed to support the primary and secondary

industries. Service industry, banking, finance, wholesale, retail,
transportation, communication services, professional and education
promoted and provided the full development of the industrial age.

• During this period, printing flourished and education became mass based.
The radio provided a fast means of communication with people from the
urban to the rural areas.

The telegram made communication faster while the post office has kept
utilizing the snail mail. The telephone was also invented to expedite
communication for the people as well as for the growth of the different

became so fast and a lot cheaper. The computer also became
compact and portable with the introduction of laptop. Now, children,

should know when to indulge in them.

• Social networking sites became available. At present, the popular

sites are the Facebook, Instagram, and the Twitter. Communication
with the family whether local or international became easy and fast.
Letter writing is now being forgotten especially by the young people.
8

• Another form of media that is being left out is the newspaper

because of the easy access of the news via the television and the
internet. The mobile phone can now access the internet.
• This period is now called the new information age, the computer and
the internet are now used in almost all aspects in the different
industries:

with the DFA can be done through their website, same goes
with applying for and NBI clearance. Test results from the PRC
can be downloaded.

day-to-day routine. There is online business. One can choose
clothes or gadgets through online.

There are e-books for e-learning. Some institutions have school
website for a quick and information dissemination. Some
schools have online enrollment system.
➢ Hospitals – medical practitioners’ schedule are made
accessible online so a person can check their availability prior
to medical consultation.
These are just some clear indicators of how the use of
Internet made life more convenient.
