A Portuguese explorer was sailing for the
country of Spain . On the “First World
Circumnavigation” performed by
Ferdinand Magellan, he found an
archipelago. The discovery by him and his
crew were the first well documented
arrival of European in the island
(Homonhon Island, Samar, Philippines) .
He named the island “La Islas de San
Lazaro” as it was St. Lazarus day when
they reached the island.

•During the stay of Magellan on the
island, he befriended some island
chiefs, especially Rajah Humabon of
Cebu.
•They sealed their alliance through
Pacto de Sangre. Rajah Humabon,
his wife, his subjects and the other
800 inhabitants were the first to
convert in Christianity.
•After baptizing as Catholic, he was
then named as “Don Carlos”.
•The first Santo Nino relic was given
as a gift.

Magellan were killed by the natives led by Lapu-Lapu.
After Magellan was killed, Spain sent different expedition to explore again the island but
failed.

• Marshall Goiti arrived at the Pasig River part of the Kingdom of Maynila. Lakan
Dula, Rajah Soliman and Rajah Matanda were defeated by the Spaniards.

Goiti to seek for help from Legazpi.
Legazpi with 27 ships and 280
Spaniards and 600 locals
conquered the Kingdom of
Maynila.
Legazpi formed a peace pact with
the Rajah Sulayman and Rajah
Lakandula.

officially defeated.

Legazpi established a permanent
settlement and proclaimed Manila
as the “Island’s Capital” and
permanent seat of the Spanish
colonial government in the
Western Pacific Ocean.

The second governor general after
the death of Legazpi was
proclaimed. Guido de Lavezars
broke the treaty made between
Legazpi and the former native
rulers of Maynila.

Due to the changes made
by Lavezars, Lakandula
and Sulayman revolt took
place.
• Other island chiefs with Lakandula created another revolt plan to
remove the Spaniards in the North, however, it the plan reached the
Spaniards due to the traitors. Due to the planned revolt, others were
put tp death and some were exiled.
• This was supposed to be the second revolt by natives against Spain.

The Philippine Referendum of 1599 was completed.
Spain has now legitimate sovereignty over the islands
of the La Islas Filipinas.
