Grammar: Common and Proper Nouns
A noun is the name of a person, place, animal, thing or idea.
A proper noun is a special name given to a person, place, animal or thing. These nouns are always capitalized. Examples: Special names given to a boy is Robert, Shivraj, Ling… A special name given to a girl is Kathy, Ameena, Bhava… A special name given to a place is Georgetown, Regent Street, Durban Park, Houston Secondary School… A secial name given to a dog is Rover, Fluffy, Browny, Bow Wow….. Note each noun is capitalized reguardless of its place in a sentence. A common noun is a general name given to person, place, animal or thing having the same (or similar) characteristics. Examples: girl, boy, bird, hand, foot, street, city…..
Exercise
Draw one line under the common noun and two lines under the proper noun.
1. The man bought a play-station for Christmas.
2. We visited Kaieteur Falls for our vacation. 3. Bruno barked loudly at the cat during dinner. 4. Peter refused the lemonade but ate ice-cream often. 5. Cricket is Peter’s favourite sport. 6. When going to the zoo, we always purchase chicken at Royal Castle. 7. Fort Kyk-Over-Al is a famous monument in Guyana. 8. My dog, Rover, barked loudly at the intruder. 9. We asked Mr. Rivers for the mangoes that fell from his tree. 10. The kiskadees flittered around the many blossoms in our garden. 11. We love to visit Movie Town to see new movies like Mulan. 12. Our loud family is famous for making and selling delicious treats. 13. Varshanie no longer goes to the park because of the snake they saw there. 14. My grandmother is old but strong. 15.
