Listening Comprehension
Part B Longer Conversation

A. Things to know
1. It’s a 60 – 90 second conversation on casual topic between two people.
2. Each of the conversation is followed by four multiple choice questions.
3. The topic of the conversation can be about some aspects about school life (how difficult
the class is, how to write a research paper, how to register a course) or about general
living (renting an apartment, playing sports, going to the bank). The conversation can
also be about the topics currently in the news in the USA (desalination of the water
supply, recycling of the used products, damage from a storm and some other natural
phenomenon).

B. Procedures for the Long Conversation

1. Preview the answers to the questions. Try to anticipate the question for each group of
answers.
2. Listen to carefully the first line of the conversation. The first line of the conversation often
contains the main idea, subject, or topic of the conversation.
3. As you listen to the conversation, follow along with the answers in your test book and try
to determine the correct answer.
4. Guessing the answer will be the last thing you do.
5. Use any remaining time to look ahead at the answers to question that follow.

C. Useful Skills
1. Anticipate the question
It is very useful to your ability to answer individual question accompanying the long
conversation if you can anticipate what the question will be and listen specifically for the
answers to those questions.
2. Anticipate the topic
As you listen to each long conversation, you should be thinking about the topic / subject
/ main idea for each conversation which can be found in the first part of the
conversation.
3. The order of the answers
The answers to questions accompanying long conversation are generally found in order
in the conversation. This means that as you listen to the conversation, you should be
thinking about the answers to the questions in the order they are listed in the test book.
