STEAM
Uses of Steam on the Ship:
1. For propulsion to drive the ship 2. For Electric power generation on steam ships and some motor ships n. Used to drive cargo pump on tanker ships to transfer the oil taken 4. Winch and Windlass are also driven by steam in some ships like tankers 5. For creating vacuum inside condensers 6. Cargo oil tanks’ stripping pumps are driven by steam 7. For heating cargo in both steam and motor tankers 8. General service steam for cleaning filter mesh, and sanitizing MLO sump in case of microbiological degradation (bacterial attack) of sump oil by steam lancing 9. For warming up the Engine in cold areas and prior to starting 10. For operating ship’s whistle on some ships 11. For heating fuel oil for ME, AE, Boiler, purifier, bunker tank, settling & service tank and also lube oil going to purifiers 12. For heat waste oil tanks, dirty oil or drain oil tanks and the waste oil in waste oil service tank for Incineration 1n. Sea chest grating are blown through (cleaned) with help of steam 14. Commonly used for soot blowing M.E. Economizer And Boiler Flue Gas Uptake on ships 15. Used for operating derricks on some ships 16. Heating accommodation and hot water for accommodation use, etc. 17. Producing FW in FWG by heating SW when heat of ME- JCW is not available.
Major Components of Marine Steam Plant:-
1. Oil Fired Boiler: - Pressure vessels called as Boiler provided with a Burner arrangement to heat water and thus generate steam 2. Hot Well or Cascade Tank: - Dedicated tank for supplying clean fresh distilled water at high temperature to the boiler and to collect the return steam from the system 3. Feed Water Pumps (boiler, Economizer, Main Feed Pumps): - To Supply feed water from the Hotwell to the Boiler 4. Exhaust Gas Boiler or Economizer: - An Excess Heat retrieving system, which uses main engine exhaust to generate additional steam. 5. Main and Auxiliary Steam systems: - The Steam generated is provided to Main (propulsion via Steam turbines in Steam ships) and various Auxiliary systems in the ships for consumption. Some examples of Auxiliary Steam systems are: - a. 16K Steam systems: - for driving Cargo Oil Pump Turbines (COPT) and Water Ballast Pump Turbines (WBPT) b. 9K Steam Systems: - for driving Stripping Pumps, as Driving steam in Air Ejectors for creating vacuum in Large Vacuum Condensers, tank cleaning heater c. 7K Steam Systems: - General Service Steam, as heating medium for most heaters- for example- heating fuel oil for ME, AE, Boiler, purifier, as heating medium in heating coils in tanks where heating may be required for example- bunker tank, settling & service tank, waste oil tanks, dirty oil or drain oil tanks and the waste oil in waste oil service tank for Incineration, soot blowing, steam chest grating blow through etc. d. 4K Steam System: - Heating accommodation; and hot water for accommodation, galley use, etc. 6. Dump Condenser: - Excess steam is condensed by seawater cooler, and the condensate (condensed water) is returned to Hot Well. 7. EGB (or Boiler) Water Circulating Pump: - to supply and circulate hot boiler water (from the boiler water drum) to and inside the Exhaust gas boiler (Economizer).
Procedure for lighting the Boiler manually and automatically:-
For Automatic Firing: - 1. Visually check water level and switch on boiler control panel. Confirm the Mode selector switch on Auto mode 2. Sensing low steam pressure, boiler control panel will activate the boiler start signal’ n. Fuel pump and F.D. Fan will start 4. Once fuel temperature is normal, forced draft fan flaps will move to Full Open position to purge the Boiler furnace, 5. Purge timer completes sequences and flaps will close to Minimum air position. Sequence 4 & 5 is also called as Furnace Pre-Purge Operation 6. Igniter Unit consisting of Pilot Burner, step-up transformer and Electrodes activates and gets lit up. 7. After few seconds, the main burner shut-off valve will open, and allow fuel into the boiler (at correct temperature and pressure) 8. After 5 seconds, the flame sensor must detect the flame, or the burner will shut- off on Flame-Failure 9. Burner will fire on High Flame if the pressure is low and the F.D. Fan will admit appropriate air quantity 10. As the steam pressure rises, the burner will flow to Low Flame and again the F,D, Fan will follow and admit appropriate air quantity 11. If the steam pressure reaches maximum operating pressure, the burner will cut out 12. After a certain Pre-Set minimum operating period, the F.D. will stop. 1n. The fuel pump will remain operating to maintain fuel temperature Procedure for Stopping the Boiler: - (4 – 6 marks) A> Before shutting down boiler: - 1. Inform Chief engineer 2. If the Boiler is required to be stopped for a Longer Duration for Maintenance or opened up for survey, change the fuel to distillate fuel. n. Top up DO service tank 4. Change over M/E, A/E and boiler to Diesel oil 5. Stop all purifier 6. Shut all heating and tracing steam valve 7. Soot blow the boiler furnace uptake 8. If separate heating arrangements for heavy oil is present then there is no need to change over to distillate fuel and the oil is kept on circulation mode
B> Shutting down Boiler:-
9. Stop the Boiler Automatic cycle 10. Change over to manual firing 11. Stop firing 12. Purge boiler for 5 minutes 1n. Shut main steam stop valve 14. Close the Boiler feed water valves 15. Switch off power, off the circuit breaker and remove fuses for FD fan, FO pumps, feed pumps and control panel. 16. Put a notice on the circuit breaker mentioned above 17. Shut all fuel valve and atomizing steam valve and lock them in shut position, blank the line if necessary 18. Allow boiler to cool down slowly 19. When the Boiler pressure is just reduced to over the Atmospheric pressure, the air vent is to opened to prevent collapse or damage due to vacuum formation inside the boiler
