a. How has ICT changed the way the people live? Provide positive and
negative effects of ICT in general.
Answer: Technology evolves, as it evolves there more we find more
convenient ways to get many things done in a day without too much
hassle and this is one of the great benefits of having new technology. New
Technology Improves quality of life for human beings and as a side effect
it makes it complex and have a negative effects on the environment.
Possibly the greatest impact of ICT on individuals is the huge increase in
access to information and services that has accompanied the growth of
internet. It made communication easier and cheaper. The use of ICT
access to information has brought new opportunities for leisure and
entertainment, the facility to make contacts and form relationships with
people around the world, the ability to obtain goods and services from a
wide range suppliers and the improved access to education. Meanwhile,
one of the largest negative effects of ICT can be the loss of a person’s job.
Manual operations are being replaced by automation. Reduced personal
interaction – people do not get a chance to meet and talk to with each
other, they may feel isolated an unhappy. Another negative effect is that
users may adopt a more sedentary lifestyle that can lead to health
problems such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes and may even lead
to death.

work and communicate?
ou urc

Answer: Information Communication Technology (ICT) has significantly

changed the way people live, work, communicate and learn. ICT
influences many parts of our works and lives, as well as many of our free
o

time activities. In education to be more specific it has been proven that

ICT is a very important part of teaching and learning process. ICT creates

new forms of learning that can be customized to students needs. Lessons

that based on the learners' skills can be designed in new and more
effective ways. Scientific studies are becoming easier through computer

Technology allows us to easily connect with people worldwide by the use

of social media. We don’t have to wait for a stamped letter to make its
way across the miles or rack up a big long-distance phone bill (as was the
case not that long ago); instead via the Internet we can instantly reach
almost anyone whether through email, instant message, social media, or

c. What will be the role of ICT in the context of your professional track? What
role will ICT play in your future profession?
Answer:
ICT will play a big part in my future professional track which is either civil
engineering or chemical engineering. ICT can be used in construction. It
involves cost estimation and schedule management or any one of them. It
may also include choice of technology, time taken to complete each tasks,
required resources etc. Regular maintenance of the constructed structures
can be done using ICT. The uses of technology in construction are complex

and expensive solutions .Although its initial cost is greater the use of ICT
is found to have long term benefits in the construction process. In
chemical engineering, software and technology skills are required. The ICT
subject in my senior high school could give me the useful knowledge that I
can use in my future professional track.

The Impact of ICT on Professional Practice in the Nigerian Construction

Industry

The potential of ICT for improving the quality of professional services in the
construction industry is generally acknowledged. While reports abound on ICT in the
construction industries of developed countries, very little exists for developing
countries. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the current state of ICT in
professional practice in the Nigerian construction industry in the context of a
developing economy.

A survey of the current state of ICT in architectural, engineering and quantity

surveying practices in the Nigerian construction industry was conducted in South
West Nigeria. The results indicated that while core architectural, engineering and
quantity surveying functions (like drawing, engineering design and preparation of
bills of quantities respectively) have been largely computerized, data and document
management is still done in the traditional way in most cases. The Internet is
gaining popularity with over 60% of the respondents currently connected. For now
most of the professionals use the Internet mainly for e‐mails and its potentials in
more strategically important areas like e‐business and electronic data transfer are
yet to be fully exploited.

m
The impact of ICT on professional practice has been mainly in making jobs easier for

er as
the professions, facilitating decision‐making and savings in operating costs, among

co
others. The notoriously inefficient national electric power supply system and the
eH w
high cost of computer hardware and software in relation to the dwindling fortunes of
the professions in Nigeria's depressed economy are the key obstacles to increased

o.
rs e
investments in ICT. However, most of the respondents (about 80%) were optimistic
about the future of ICT in the Nigerian construction industry, with plans for major
ou urc

new ICT investments in teleworking, videoconferencing and electronic data

management (EDM). These findings, it is hoped, should guide the construction
industry in Nigeria in adopting appropriate policies to internalize the globally
o

acclaimed benefits of ICT.

Despite the attractive features of ICT in education, and the many advantages that
is

successful use of these technological resources can offer to the education sector in
Th

general, their use in engineering educational content delivery is still lagging behind
other educational disciplines. In this paper we look closely at the challenges that
face full utilization of these technology resources in engineering educational content
delivery, the great opportunities that ICT can offer, and actions that can be taken to
sh

overcome the challenges. The challenges are exemplified in: the quantitative nature
of engineering discipline, lack of awareness of pedagogical use of ICT in education
and the lack of clear policy of how and what type of engineering educational
content delivery mode can benefit most from available ICT resources. Opportunities
available for full utilization of ICT facilities are summarized in: the wide availability
of computing resources, high speed internet access and general ICT knowhow
among the young generations of both students and instructors among others.
Actions to be taken for proper utilization of ICT resources in engineering education
are given, and Blended Mode of learning, which combines face-to-face with online
learning, is suggested as the most suitable mode for engineering educational
content delivery.

Evaluating the use of ICT in engineering education

Author: Michael F. Christie ,André Jaun &Lars-Erik Jonsson

Year of publication: 2010

This paper is based on an evaluation of a mixed mode course called Learning

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations from the Web. The authors
discuss the impact of information communication technology (ICT) on the provision
of tertiary education and cite the course as an example of how it can be used at the
subject level. The course employed ICT in a number of different ways. The
introductory part of the course was held in a specifically designed video-
conferencing facility that had a range of ICT capabilities. The design of the room is
critiqued as is the use that was made of it. Throughout the paper the authors
emphasize the point that ICT is a powerful tool for teaching and learning but failure
to plan, deliver and assess ICT-based courses on sound pedagogical grounds merely
means that poor teaching and learning practices are disseminated more widely and
more quickly. On the basis of our evaluation we propose a simple set of questions
that can be used to evaluate the best use of ICT in engineering education.
