Essay
Question

CHILD CARE: If you were considering leaving your three-year-old child in a child care facility
(family daycare or child care center), what would be your major concerns? Why? Would your
concerns be different, if your child were an infant? Explain. Would you prefer an academic or a
child-centered preschool for your child? Why?

Answer

If I were to have a three-year-old child, my major concerns would be the daily routine,
what developmental skills are practiced, and the environment. I have a unique perspective on
daycare and working with children because I was a kindergarten teacher for two years for
students with autism, down syndrome, and cerebral palsy. That being said, my judgment may be
controlling.
With my experience in the classroom, I know how important it is to have a structured
routine. It is critical to have activities or sessions planned for the day and to have backup
activities planned as well. The sessions can range from free-play to music time. It does not
matter what the activities are, but there should be a beginning and end to each activity. Following
a routine is essential for the children to learn executive functioning (Berger, 2019, p. 171). I want
to send my child to a daycare that has a routine and is not a ‘free for all’ all day long. I would
accept 30 minutes of free play, but I also would need to accept the environment in which they are
playing in.
When we watched the videos for the observation report, I noticed that the environment
that the boy was playing in had many activities spaced out and ready to be used. There were
many areas of different activities that were not all mixed together. There was enough space for
the children to roam around to the separate areas of the room. On the other hand, I had the
experience of stopping by a daycare that my kindergarten students used to go to before and after
school. This daycare was the opposite of what a daycare should look like. The room was empty
except for gym pads. This environment did not benefit the children in any way. Because the
environment was not engaging, the children initiated play with each other that turned into
fighting. That is why the daycare environment would be a major concern for me.
Lastly, I would like the daycare to practice developmental skills that are appropriate for
the children’s ages. I do not expect the daycare to be a school, but I do expect the daycare to be
beneficial for the children’s growth and development. I would want educated staff helping the
children develop gross and fine motor skills, life skills, academic and social skills such as
preoperational intelligence (Berger, 2019, p. 165). This ties back into the daily routine and
having an organized structure. The activities throughout the day should target these critical
developmental skills. I would love for the children to have a total of sixty minutes of academics.
Life skills can be a combination of mealtime, cleaning up toys, and greeting others. Although
gross motor skills are typically developing by age two, expanding those movements and
comfortability can be practiced with almost any group game (Berger, 2019, p. 161). Meanwhile,
fine motor skills can be targeted through and individual activities like painting or playdough.
All in all, I have a strong vision of what I would want for my three-year-old child to
experience in daycare. My concerns would not be different if my child were an infant. My
concerns for daycare of broad enough to apply toward any age group whether that is two or four
years old. Generally, I would prefer a child-centered preschool environment with some fun
academic activities intertwined. If I had the opportunity, I would enjoy opening my own daycare
and bring my vision to life.
