Media and Information Literacy

Module 8

What I know

1. What issues do you see in the poster?

- The issue depicted in the picture is that there are numerous cybercrimes that
can occur while utilizing the media or the internet, particularly social media.

2. Which ones do you understand? Which ones do you not know?

- I understand everything because I learned about it a lot in studying the module

when I was in grade 11.

3. What possible dangers and issues of unguarded use of the internet are
depicted in the picture?

- Gambling, bullies, avatars, identity thieves, narcotics, predators, accessing

porn sites, texting or sexting, hackers and warex, illicit downloads, and unlawful
conduct are some of the potential dangers and issues depicted in the picture.

4. Which of these issues have happened to you or to your friends? Why did they
happen?

- The issue that I had was that I was a victim of cyber bullying and identity theft.
This happened because I used to share a lot of my pictures and social media
platforms. I'm not sure why I was bullied, but some individuals truly enjoy
tormenting others to satisfy their insecurities.

What I Have Learned

1. Intellectual Property refers to

- Intellectual property refers to creations of the mind: inventions; literary and

artistic works; and symbols, names and images used in commerce.

2. Intellectual Property has five types, namely

- copyright, patent, trademark, industrial design, and geographical origin.

3. The similarities of fair-use and creative commons are

- both tackles the possibilities of using copyrighted works in accordance with the
law.

4. Infringement happens when

- Infringement happens when one or more of the copyright owner's exclusive

economic or moral rights are violated.

5. Plagiarism is unethical because

- Plagiarism is unethical since it is stealing to take someone else's ideas and

words and claim them as your own.

What I Can Do

1. The violations are design patents and trade dress. To avoid such violation,
instead of copying or recreating other’s design, Skechers can innovate their
own design where they can be recognized and where they are known for
2. The violations are Trademark infringement and Intellectual Property Rights
in technology. To avoid those, don’t use other’s work and don’t put
unnecessary things in your work.

3. The violation is Trademark Patent. To avoid such violation, the business

owner should create his own business logo where he can totally own it and
where his business will be recognized by its uniqueness.

4. Plagiarism is the violation. To avoid it, the owner of the plagiarized work
must put proper citation or attribution to his work,

Assessment
1. One of the common issues regarding intellectual property is Plagiarism.
Plagiarism is rampant not only on social media or in other bigger field but also
in school. Many students pass plagiarized output just to comply. Many people
think that plagiarism is just a trivial matter; they are not taking it as a serious
issue since they are practicing plagiarism more often from studying until now.
To avoid plagiarism in smaller sectors such as school, there must be a school
regulation where plagiarism is strictly prohibited and whoever is caught will be
punished.

2. According to an article by SPOT. Ph, Philippines is a copycat nation where

there are 10 profiles of plagiarism. As evidence, if we observe the names of
most sari- sari store and logos of different business and establishments in our
country are almost the exact copy of other company. To address such problem,
the Republic of the Philippines implemented a Law; the Philippines Cybercrime
Prevention Act (RA 10175). The law itself has a special law which is the
Intellectual Property Code. According to Department of Justice, means that
plagiarism itself is not a crime but that plagiarism that also amounts to copyright
infringement is. Such plagiarism now carries a penalty of 3-6 years
imprisonment and a fine of P50,000 - P150,000), if prosecuted under the law
