Stadia Surveying and Area of Irregular Boundaries: Study Guide For Module No. - 5
0 10-July-2020
This course deals with the study of the theory of surveying instruments includes tape, compass, transit, stadia;
creating traverse leveling, subdivision of lots; solving areas of traverse using the different methods;
topographic surveying methods; hydrographic surveying methods. Design and layout of horizontal and vertical
curves, line grade; earthwork volumes, theory of location as applied to highway and railways, mass diagram,
overhaul and estimate of cost.
This module provides information on how to determine distances and difference in elevation using stadia
surveying and determining of area of irregular boundaries using different approach. Sample problems are
presented to provide more understanding of the topic.
STADIA SURVEYING

PROBLEM 1
Using an engineer’s transit, the upper and lower stadia hair readings on a stadia rod at STA. B were
observed as 4.20m and 2.00m., respectively. The rod reading is taken at 3.10m and the height of instrument
above STA. A is 1.75m. The stadia interval factor of the telescope at STA. A is 98.9 and its stadia constant is
0.30m. If the vertical angle observed is - 30.23⁰, det. the following:
PROBLEM 2
An instrument with stadia constant of 0.30m was set-up somewhere at mid-length of a long
span steel bridge. The rod readings tabulated below were observed on a stadia rod held
successively at the vicinity of the concrete abutments in the Eastern and Western approaches of the
bridge. If k = 100, determine the following:
HAIR READINGS
ROD POSITION
UPPER MIDDLE LOWER
ROD AT EASTERN
2.98 1.68 0.38
APPROACH
ROD AT WESTERN
3.54 2.02 0.49
APPROACH
A. Distance of the center of the instrument to the eastern approach of the bridge
B. Distance of the center of the instrument to the western approach of the bridge
C. Length of the bridge

PROBLEM
The following measurements given below are the offsets taken from an irregular boundary near a
river. The uniform interval of the measurements is 2.0 m.
