Analyze and Explore

Repairing and enhancing photos is an important skill for people such as graphic designers, restoration
experts, and professional photographers. It is a useful skill for the amateur photographer as well. Many families have
old photographs that have been damaged over time, and most people have taken a red-eye photo, a photo that is too
light and dark, or one in which the subject is tilted. Photoshop to restore, correct, and improve their photographs.
It is impossible to make every photo look perfect- even with graphic-editing software. Therefore, enhancing and
repairing photos is both an art and science. Using the digital tools available in Photoshop, you can employ technology
to make reparative and restorative changes.

The Spot Healing Brush Tool
The Spot Healing Brush Tool removes blemishes and imperfections by sampling pixels around the spot.
Photoshop the paints in the image with matching texture, lighting, transparency and shading.

To Repair Damage with the Spot Healing Brush Tool

● Zoom in on the child’s face and head
● Right click the current healing tool on the Tool panel
● Click Spot Healing Brush Tool in the list to select it.
● If necessary on the options bar, click the Mode box arrow, and then click Normal
● Click the Proximity Match option button, if necessary, to select it.
● Click the spot and then move the mouse pointer away to view the result.
● Click the Create Texture option button on the options bar to select it.

The Healing Brush Tool

The healing Brush Tool is better suited for larger areas such as tears or wrinkles. While the Spot Healing Brush
Tool samples the surrounding pixels automatically, the Healing Brush Tool requires you to choose the sampled (source)
area, as you did with the Clone Tool. When using the Healing Brush Tool, the Brush Preset picker allow you to set
specific characteristics of the brush, including the use of a tablet pen. The Mode box allows you to choose one of
several blending modes, or choose to replace the pixels to preserve the grain and texture at the edges of the brush
stroke.

The Patch Tool

The Patch Tool lets you repair imperfections within a selected area using pixels from another area using pixels
from another area or by using patterns. The Patch Tool is more than just a copy-and-paste mechanism, however. Like
the Healing Brush Tool, the Patch Tool matches the texture, shading, and lighting of the pixels. When repairing with
pixels from the image, select a small area to produce the best results. The Patch Tool can sample pixels from the same
image, from a different image, or from a chosen pattern. The patch Tool options bar displays settings for the source
and destination of the patch, as well as options to adjust the selection or use a pattern to make the patch repair.

Zapping Shines and Shadows

Shiny spots (or hot spots, as some folks call them) are truly evil. They can ruin a perfectly good photo by making
your subject look like a big ol’ sweat ball. That’s OK if the person just finished a marathon—glistening skin
is expected then—but not if she’s sitting for a portrait. Fortunately, the Clone Stamp tool can get rid of shiny spots and
unsightly shadows in a hurry. It works by copying pixels from one area of an image to another.

How To Whiten Teeth In Photoshop

● First, select the Lasso Tool and draw a selection around the teeth.
● In the Layers panel, click the New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon and choose a Hue/Saturation adjustment
layer.
● In the Properties panel, change the Edit option from Master to Yellows.
● Drag the Saturation slider to the left to reduce the yellow in the teeth.
● Still in the Properties panel, change the Edit option from Yellows back to Master.
● Select the Brush Tool, set your Foreground color to black, then paint around the teeth on the layer mask to
hide the effects of the adjustment layer in the lips and gums.
● For images with two or more people, use a separate Hue/Saturation adjustment layer for each person for best
results.

Super Slimmers

 Photoshop has a slew of tools you can use to do some serious slimming like fixing flabby chins, shrinking
paunchy waistlines, and instantly shaving off pounds. Tools of the body-sculpting trade include the Pinch and Liquify
filters, and the Free Transform command. They’re all explained in this section.

Fixing Flabby Chins

You can suck the life out of a flabby chin with the Pinch filter. Sure it sounds gross, but it makes
a huge difference and takes mere seconds. All you have to do is duplicate the image layer and then make a rough
selection—the Lasso tool works well—that includes the flab and some of the surrounding details, as shown
in Figure 10-12, bottom left. Next, choose Filter→Distort→Pinch. In the resulting dialog box, enter 100 in the Amount
field, and then click OK. If you need to pinch the chin a little more, press ⌘-F (Ctrl+F) to run the filter again.

Skin Softeners
Skin is the body’s largest organ, but not everyone gives it the respect it deserves. Folks sometimes forget to
use sunblock, moisturizer, and so on. This section explains how to make anyone’s skin look like it’s really well cared
for. You’ll learn how to make it appear soft and glowing, and even how to reduce lines and wrinkles, all without
spending tons of money on anti-aging creams.

Selective Blur
One of the fastest ways to smooth skin is to give it a good dose of the Gaussian Blur filter (named for the
gentleman who invented this blur method, Carl Gauss). This filter is often the only skin fixer you need, and it’s faster
than the Healing brushes you learned about earlier in this chapter. The beauty of this filter is that you can run it as a
smart filter, lower the filter’s opacity, and then use the included mask to apply the filter only where you need it

To soften skin, follow these steps:

● Open a photo and convert it for smart filters.
● With the smart object active, choose Filter→Blur→Gaussian Blur, and then adjust the blur.
● Fill the Smart Filter’s mask with black.
● Press B to grab the Brush tool, and then set your foreground color chip to white.
● With a fairly large, soft-edged brush, paint the parts of the skin you want to blur.
● Lower the Gaussian Blur filter’s opacity to around 60 percent.

Show-Stopping Eyes
Lightening Eyes
A quick and painless way to make eyes stand out and look sultry is to lighten them by changing their blend
mode to Screen. This technique enhances the iris and brightens the white bits. To achieve this effect without
duplicating the original layer (which increases your file’s size), just use an empty adjustment layer.

Here’s what you do:

● Pop open a photo and add an empty adjustment layer.
● Set the adjustment layer’s blend mode to Screen.
● Fill the adjustment layer’s mask with black.
● Grab the Brush tool and set your foreground color chip to white.
● Paint the eye area.
● If you want to enhance the effect, duplicate the adjustment layer, and then lower its opacity.
● Save the image as a PSD file.
