2.3 PNEUMATIC ACTUATOR
Type of actuator: Heavy duty type Double acting pneumatic actuator with dual coil
solenoid valves.

2.3.1 Solenoid Valve

I. Operating Voltage- 48V DC.
II. Type of solenoid valve- 5 ports / 2 way to ensure stay put condition of the dampers,
on electrical and pneumatic supply failure.
III. MOC of the body- Brass.
IV. Pressure rating – solenoid valve shall be rated to handle working pressure of 7 Kg/Sq
cm (g).
V. Solenoid coil enclosure shall be IP65 rated with ½ inch female cable entry provision.
VI. Process connection size- To be decided by the supplier based on flow requirement of
the actuator. Process connection threads shall be NPT.
VII. Required PRV – pressure as well as flow shall be selected by the supplier as per the
pneumatic cylinder design.
VIII. PRVs and Solenoid valve shall be mounted in the damper frame and tubing from the
PRV to Solenoid valve and Solenoid valve to cylinder shall be done by the supplier. If

the cylinder moves during operation, then the pneumatic connections shall be done
with flexible metallic hose.

2.3.2 Open/Close Limit switches

Each damper shall be provided with two limit switches one each for extreme positions
(one to actuate when the damper is fully open and another to actuate when the damper
is fully closed). Each switch shall consist of DPDT contacts with 48VDC, 1A
(inductive), contact resistance of limit switch shall be less than 50 m ohm. Limit
switches shall be actuated by damper travel and shall be supplied in weather proof
housing-IP65.The housing shall have two nos of ½ inch NPT cable entry ports.

2.4 Codes & Standards

The design, materials, construction features, manufacture, inspection, testing and
performance of air dampers shall comply with all currently applicable statutes,
regulations, codes and standards. Nothing in this specification shall be construed to
relieve the supplier of his responsibility. In particular, the dampers shall conform to
the latest edition of following standards:

ASME AG-1, Div-II, Sec-DA-4000: Code on nuclear air and gas treatment.

ANSI/AMCA 500-D-07: Laboratory methods of testing dampers

for rating.

IS 2062: Specification for Weldable Structural

Steel.

3. GENERAL TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS.

3.1 Bids from the Damper manufacturers will only be entertained.

3.2 Quality Assurance Plan (QAP) has to be made by supplier and approved by IGCAR.
All QA inspection including performance test shall be done as per QAP.

3.3 Supplier shall submit GA drawing and data sheet of equipment indicating all part
details for approval of IGCAR prior to manufacturing.

3.4 Damper overall dimensions are mentioned in Table1 and Fig.1. All the dimensions
mentioned in the specification are in mm. Flange dimensions shall be selected by
supplier according to their manufacturing standards. Set of companion flanges along
with fasteners for each damper shall be supplied along with damper.

3.5 Complete design is included in the scope of the supplier. Thickness and diameter
mentioned in specification are minimum values allowed. Supplier has to submit
detailed calculations in arriving at actual thickness of damper blades and body for
approval of IGCAR before start of manufacturing.

3.6 Actuator selection calculations also shall be forwarded to IGCAR for review and
approval prior to manufacturing.

3.7 Separate data sheet shall be forwarded with respect to I&C components i.e. Pneumatic
Actuator, limit switch and solenoid valve assembly etc. for approval of IGCAR prior
to manufacturing.

3.8 All the dampers shall be performance tested at shop as a part of pre-dispatch
inspection.

3.9 After completing supply of equipment to IGCAR, the same will be installed by
IGCAR at site and Performance test will be conducted. During performance test if any
deviation with respect to leakages and open close operations is observed, then supplier
has to repair the equipment without charging any additional cost up to a period of one
year from the date of supply.

4. LEAK TEST FOR DAMPERS.

All the dampers shall be designed for a leakage of less than 1% of normal flow in
closed condition. Set-up required to test the dampers for leakage is shown in the
figure below:

Fig. 2 Typical test setup for leak testing of dampers.

Following points shall be taken care while doing the leak test:
• Seating torque shall be applied to the damper blades before starting the test.
• The difference in static pressure readings of pressure gauge-1 and pressure gauge -2
shall be equal to design pressure given in Table-1 of technical specifications.
• The pressurizing source shall be selected such that, the differential pressure and
leakage flow requirements are met during the test.
• Dimension represented as “#” shall be chosen such that the velocity in the pipe is
within the range of anemometer.
• If the flow measurement using anemometer is not possible, flow measurement method
can be changed to Fig.6.1 or 6.2 of AMCA 500-D.
