Judas Maccabeus is praised for sending money for the expiation of the dead, in
accordance with his belief in the resurrection. This prefigures our own desire that our
departed loved ones maybe resurrected with Christ.
A reading from the second book of Maccabees.
Judas, the ruler of Israel, took up a collection among all his soldiers, amounting to two
thousand silver drachmas, which he sent to Jerusalem to provide for an expiatory
sacrifice. In doing this he acted in a very excellent and noble way, in as much as he
has the resurrection of the dead in view; for if he were not expecting the fallen to rise
again, it would have been useless and foolish to pray for them in death. But if he did this
with a view to the splendid reward that awaits those who had gone to rest in godliness,
it was a holy and pious thought. Thus he made atonement for the dead that they might
be freed from this sin.
1. Out of the depths I cry to you, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice! Let your ears be
attentive to my voice in supplication. (R)
2. If you, O LORD, mark iniquities, LORD, who can stand? But with you is
forgiveness, that you may be revered. (R)
3. I trust in the LORD; my soul trusts in his word. More than sentinels wait for the
dawn, let Israel wait for the LORD. (R)
4. For with the LORD is kindness and with him is plenteous redemption; and he will
redeem Israel from all their iniquities. (R)
Second Reading (Rom 14:7-9, 10c-12)

Our life is a gift from God. It must, therefore, be lived and directed to others and not only
to one’s self.
Brothers and sisters: No one lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live,
we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die,
we are the Lord’s. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of
both the dead and the living. Why then do you judge your brother? Or you, why do you
look down on your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgement seat of God; for
it is written: As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bend before me, and every
tongue shall give praise to God. So then each of us shall give an accounting of himself
to God.
People: (Alleluia, alleluia.) Our true home is in heaven, and Jesus Christ,
whose return we long for, will come from heaven to save us.
(Alleluia, alleluia.)
Jesus said to his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God;
have faith also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling places. If there
were not, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? And if I go
and prepare a place for you, I will come back again and take you to myself, so that
where I am you also may be. Where I am going you know the way.” Thomas said to
him, “Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?” Jesus
said to him, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the father except
through me.
Presider: Let us pray to the lord that we may come to share more fully in the life
Christ brings us through his suffering, death, and resurrection. We pray
that our beloved dead may be welcomed into Christ’s glory. We also pray
for ourselves, that the Lord may give us hope and comfort. We call on the
Lord:
C: That the Church, the people of God, may radiate hope to the world ever in agony
because of poverty, terrorism, natural calamities, sin and death. Let us pray to
the Lord: (R)
C: That our country and people, struggling from political conflict, graft and
corruption, materialism, and hopelessness may experience peace and journey in
hope. Let us pray to the Lord: (R)
C: That those who suffer the loss of their beloved ones may be strengthened by
their faith in Jesus, who is the Resurrection and the Life. Let us pray to the Lord:
(R)
C: That N., who was given the promise of eternal life in Baptism, and ate the bread
of life in the Eucharist, may share the communion of saints in heaven. Let us
pray to the Lord: (R)
C: That those who have died in the hope of rising again may enjoy the peace and
joy of God’s kingdom. Let us pray to the Lord: (R)
Presider: God of life, Jesus our Lord has overcome death for us. Help us to rise
from our weakness and despair, believing that nothing can ever separate
us from your love.
We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.
