Cupflow: Cuspated / Dimple Sheet Drainage Composite

CUPFLOW is a prefabricated sheet drain composed of a polypropylene formed core with dimples covered by a non-woven polypropylene filter fabric. The core provides void space to relieve hydrostatic pressure while the fabric allows liquids and gases to pass through while preventing soil particles. It is used for applications like green roof drainage, highway edge drains, relieving pressure behind retaining walls, bridge abutments, tunnel drainage, and landfill leachate collection. It provides benefits over traditional gravel drains like being thinner, having higher flow capacity, being durable and UV resistant, and being easier to install.

CUPFLOW

Cuspated / Dimple Sheet Drainage Composite

• CUPFLOW drainage composite is a two-part
prefabricated sheet drain consisting of a 3D
polypropylene formed cuspated / dimple core
covered with a non-woven polypropylene filter
fabric on one side. The formed dimple core
provides a void to relieve hydrostatic pressure
and build up. The filter fabric allows liquids and
gases to pass into the drainage core while
restricting the passage of soil particles. The filter

Introduction fabric is bonded to each dimple to minimize fabric

intrusion into the core resulting from backfill
pressure. The polypropylene core resists
chemical attack and degradation in soil.
CUPFLOW is a cost-effective alternative to gravel
/ sand drains and a solution to many drainage
problems.

Functions • APEC offers a broad range of CUPFLOW

drainage composites with various dimple heights,
compressive strengths and flow capacities.
Separation Filtration Drainage Water Protection Hydrostatic
Reservoir Pressure Relief
Benefits
- Thinner and less weight drainage layer compared to conventional
drainage. Therefore, reduction in dead load on to soil or
structures.
- Huge saving in air space of landfills, compared to gravel drains.
- Provides water reservoir, which can be used by plants in dry
seasons.
- Weep holes are omitted from retaining walls.
- High flow capacity, durable, UV resistant & long-term performance.
- Easy and quick installation without specialized equipment.
- Reduction in traffic volume, excavation and backfilling compared
to sand & gravel drains.
- Factory manufactured with high quality assured.
- Filtration properties are suitable for most soil types.
- All interior & exterior drainage, CUPFLOW can be custom made.

Green Roof Drainage
• A green roof is a roof of a building that is partially or
completely covered with vegetation and a growing medium,
planted over a waterproofing membrane. It may also
include additional layers such as a root barrier, CUPFLOW
and irrigation systems.

• General advantages of Green roof systems are Thermal

reduction and energy saving, Increased life of Roof
membrane, Water management, Sound Insulation,
Recreational Spaces, Ecological benefit, Food Production,
Urban Heat Island, Carbon sequestration and Aesthetics.

• The CUPFLOW drainage composite has an important role

to play in the total system structure of a green roof. It
buffers water and allows excess water to drain away.
During a dry period, the water stored can be reabsorbed by
the vegetation layer above. The drainage also contributes
to good aeration of the plant roots.

• Green roofs can be categorized as extensive, intensive and

semi-intensive depending on the depth of planting medium
and the amount of maintenance they need.
Highway Edge
Drains
• Roadway Edge drains has a CUPFLOW Drainage Composite that
collects and channels liquids and gases to a carrier pipe for
transportation to a suitable discharge point. Geocomposite drainage is
suitable for dealing with ground water and surface water.

• Traditional drains contain a filer stone, typically 300mm deep, will trap
the silt and detritus and can be periodically excavated and replaced. On
the other hand, CUPFLOW drainage composites provides an ideal
alternative for ‘traditional’ stone and constructions in the formation of
surface and subsurface drainage systems saving time and money on
construction projects.

• When high longitudinal flow capacity is required, edge drain

geocomposite is combined with a perforated pipe, pipe diameter could
be 100mm to over 1000mm.

• Modern roadway edge drains reduce excavation, reduce backfill

quantities and reduce installation time. In-slopes, drainage increases
geotechnical stability.
Relieve hydraulic CUPFLOW Drainage Composite behind the Reinforced
Concrete or Segmental Block Retaining walls eliminating the
pressure from conventional gravel layers for vertical drainage. This drainage
Concrete and layer serves as a flow path allowing water from backfill soil into
an underdrain system. Without this drainage layer, hydrostatic
Segmental Block pressure will develop behind the retaining walls and causes
retaining walls failures. CUPFLOW eliminates weep holes.
When a new structure is built, soil is excavated, and then

then placed adjacent to the new walls or backfilled. Before
Bridge Abutments, backfilling conventionally a sand / gravel drainage layer is placed

basement walls and system. However, the reliability of sand / gravel drains is
questionable because of their easy clogging nature which results
foundation walls in hydrostatic pressure development and failure of concrete
structure. CUPFLOW is effective in mitigation of clogging and the
impermeable cuspate sheet will waterproof the structure behind.
Drainage
in Tunnels
CUPFLOW provides an effective groundwater drainage Traditional tunnel invert requires a crushed stone layer
along with its waterproofing nature surrounding the tunnel together with a longitudinal collection pipe. There is a

installed below the shotcrete followed by a waterproofing required to meet drainage requirements.
membrane and the finishing layer of tunnel with concrete CUPFLOW provides a pre-formed drainage layer onto
shotcrete. The degree of reliability depends on the which the concrete floor slab is cast and replaces both the

require additional waterproofing layer.
Leachate collection, Leak detection, Methane gas
collection and Drainage collection in landfill
capping system
CUPFLOW geocomposite eliminates the conventional drainage layer in landfills and
enhances leachate collection, leak detection, methane gas collection and capping
drainage systems in landfills. The CUPFLOW drainage composite consists of a
HDPE dimple core bonded with non-woven filter fabric on one side. CUPFLOW
provides unimpeded void space though out its service preventing any clogging in the
system.

- The purpose of the geotextile is to prevent any soil from clogging the cuspated core
and provide separation and filtration functions. This ensures proper collection of the
contaminant.

- Great savings in Air Space by eliminating sand or gravel drainage layer.

- Reduced excavation and backfilling.

- Massive reduction in traffic volume and proportionately ~70% of carbon emission.

Drainage System

Decks
• In the open areas and roof tops of a development a
horizontal drainage system is required to capture the
surface water runoff. These horizontal drainage
materials should be capable of handling certain
overburden and should be capable of developing an
impermeable layer. Therefore, CUPFLOW drainage
composites with all abilities can be used for
horizontal drainage facility.

• In the conventional methods a bituthene liquid must

be used to applied to achieve impermeable layer.
However, the impermeable nature of CUPFLOW will
eliminate the use of bituthene liquid and easy to
install.
CUPFLOW Drainage Composites will provide an effective drainage
along with lining solution to the treatment of joints between

water to enter the excavations or basements. CUPFLOW can cast
and Secant piles into the final concrete face or alternatively sprayed concrete can be
applied on to the surface to create the final finish.
