Lesson 3: Literature during the American Period

ELABORATE

Take the following Analysis questions on the Drama “Condemned”

1. What conflicts are confronted by Pablo in this excerpt? Are his internal struggles more difficult
than his clashes with the other character?

The conflicts Pablo confronted in this excerpt are his internal conflicts which are his execution
and his resentment towards his mother. His internal struggles are more difficult than his clashes
with the other characters because the external conflict that he had with others in the excerpt is
associated with his internal struggles and thus could affect his own emotions and his decision-
making which led him to commit a murder

2. how did you describe Pablo’s relationship with the three women in this excerpt? To whom is
the closest?

In this excerpt, Pablo’s relationship with Tia Cheding is a maternal bond. Despite not being her
biological mother, she still showed her motherly care to Pablo, she did and tried everything just
to save Pablo to that chair but she failed. As for his biological mother, Pablo had a dysfunctional
family relationship with her. He lay up blame to his mother for why she is condemned to the
death penalty for letting Pablo live a world without faith, without anchor, and without dreams.
And for being failed to be a mother to son. Christina in the excerpt is Pablo's fiancée and he is
truly in love with her. Among the three, the woman who is closest to Pablo would be Christina
for she was the only one who changed and cleansed the mind and soul of Pablo from being a
disastrous man, a heart polluted with petty desires, stealing, and gambling.

3. Is Pablo a dynamic character in this excerpt? Does his character experience significant change
by the end of the play? Explain.

Yes, despite his hatred and resentment towards his mother, in his final moments he was able to
look at her with compassion in his eyes and forgive her for which he called for her like a prayer
two times. This scene shows that he experienced a significant change in his character before he
died.

4. How would you evaluate Guerrero’s use of the English language in this play? Can we consider
“Condemned” to be a testament of Filipino’s mastery of the language? Justify your claim by
citing details from the excerpt.

The English language in this play was well written. Though it may not be perfect compared to
the use of the English language nowadays, I can say that the play can be successful a testament
to Filipino’s mastery of the language. As we all know that our country was colonized by the
Americans and thus the reason for our amazing English language skills. Guerrero was able to
portray perfectly the emotions of each character in the excerpt. One scene that could be an
example of this one is the ending scene where Pablo made a confession to the Father before his
execution and called to his mother twice as one of his final words. Though it may not be stated
in the excerpt, the way Guerrero portrays this scene tells us that Pablo has already forgiven his
mother and is thus finally able to release and let go of resentment towards her.

EVALUATE

A. Personal Processing of Questions. In this section, you will verify if you found the answers to
the essential questions in “EXPLORE” at the beginning of this lesson. Please write the answers
below inside the table. There were two (2) Essential Questions given for this whole Lesson 3.
Write your answers inside the table.

EQ1: What were the cultural & literary milestones introduced by the American colonizers?

The Americans introduced two significant achievements: education and culture. The first is
the establishment of free public education for all children of school age, and the second is the
adoption of English as the medium of teaching.
EQ2: How did this key piece of American culture establish such a firm grip on Philippine culture
and literature?

As a result of the English Language that the Americans introduced to the Filipinos, our culture
and literature flourished for a long period of time. Today, the majority of our literature is
written in English, which benefits those who cannot read or comprehend our language.
Because of that, our culture and literature have been studied and acknowledge abroad.

B. REFLECT on this text John 3:17

“For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world
might be saved through him.” Relate this text on the Drama “Condemned” you learned.

Pablo realized that when you had God into your lives, you would realize your actions. If you were
to sin, you would not hesitate to come to him and seek for forgiveness. You will be saved if you
come to the Father.
