THE ROLES OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY IN COMMUNICATION

Different authors have defined the phrase communication technology but all can be summarized

in the definition I will give based on my understanding

Communication technology is the use of technological tools such as mobile phones, computers,

and routers, switches to send and receive information from one point to another. Recent

technology in communication is the VoIP technology where voices are carried using internet

On the other hand, Information technology is the use of computers to store, retrieve, transmit and

manipulate data or information often in the content of a business or any other enterprise. It can

also be defined as the science which supports activities involving the creation, storage,

manipulation and communication of information, together with their related methods,

management and applications.

In my own understanding I can define information technology as a science that combines a set of

technological tools used in data manipulation, sending and retrieving of the manipulated data

through a communication channel such as a network. In summary, information technology is the

broadly based technology needed to support information systems.

Communication can be defined as a process of sending and receiving information from one

person to another or one organisation to another through a communication media

Communication as a process has been eased down by the advancement of technology and in this

essay I will explain the importance of information technology in communication

communication methods at disposal of individual. This enables individuals or organisations to

effectively communicate using the most effective platform such as emails, direct phone calls,

using social media platforms among others

Improvement in information technology has led to more efficient and reliable communication

and this can be best explained in a phrase the world has become a global village. Two people

separated by a very large distance can be linked in a fraction of a minute with either a phone call,

short message service, an electronic mail or any other form and here information is reached so

fast compared to the traditional post office delivery

Information security has also increased security on information leakage that is to say it is very

hard for one to tap into the others phone call or even sent mails, the insecurity is reduced and

incase it comes with either a technical knowledge of the person or high pay in order for one to

tap into the others communication over information technology systems

The greatest advantage is direct feedback for example if one gave a call he will be able to receive

a direct feedback and this is because of the communication systems that are full duplex

supporting two way communication between the sender and receiver and compared to the

traditional systems where when information was sent it would take a couple of days to be

delivered and that would be doubled in order for one to have a feedback

Due to advancement of information technology systems, communication has been improved to a

remote level where a meeting can be held using teleconferencing or video conferencing and

people will almost appear to be in a same room. This virtual technology aids on reducing travel

costs to have meeting for example at head office for workers from branches for example banks
Information technology has also led to reliable communication channels for example there are

limited chances of network failure and under all circumstances people may be able to

communicate

Due to the systems used communication can not be affected by environmental factors such as

poor weather among others which would affect manual systems of communication

In summary information technology has played a key role in communication and this has come

with high efficiency, cost effectiveness, reliability among other many added advantages
