GRAMMAR REVIEW 4.

EMPHASIS
I. Rules:
We can put emphasis on certain words or parts of a sentence using the following:
1. It is/was ... who/which/that 5. What
a) Susan is making lunch. a) Swimming keeps me in shape. (subject)
It is Susan who/that is making lunch. What keeps me in shape is swimming.
(emphasis on the subject: Susan) OR Swimming is what keeps me in shape.
b) Susan is making lunch. b) We love relaxing on the beach. (object)
It is lunch that Susan is making. What we love (doing) is relaxing on the beach.
(emphasis on the object: lunch) OR Relaxing on the beach is what we love (doing).
2. All (that) = The only thing (that) 6. What ... do (emphasis on verbs)
All (that) he wants is to be happy. Mike builds houses.
What Mike does is (to) build houses.
3. That is/was + question word in 7. Question word + ever (usually shows
statements surprise)
or is/was that + question word in Whoever suggested such a thing?
questions Which and whose are not used in this case.
That is what he told the police. Whose car is that? .)
Is that where he is living now? Note: Question words + ever (except for why)
can be written as one word. Whoever told you ... ?
Wherever did you find it? Whatever are you doing

4. Question word + is/was it + that in 8. We use do/does/did + infinitive without “to”

The The can emphasise uniqueness. It is heavily stressed


in speech.

Negative words: - It was not at all cold.


Not at all, in the least, really - / wasn't interested in the slightest.
I wasn't the least bit interested.

Time phrases: day after day, time and time - David reads the same book over and over again.
again, over and over again, day in, day out
- Day in day out she waited for him to come back.

Echoing phrases with So A: This is the book you are looking for. B: So it is!

May clauses It is a highly formal expression.


Although it may seem/be difficult, it is not impossible.
-> Difficult as/though it may seem/be, it is not
impossible.

Repetition of main verbs I tried and tried, but it was no use.

Possessive Pronouns
-> Theirs was a successful marriage.
