Biology Feeding Relationship Lab # 2
Topic:Feeding Relationships
Method:
1. An appropriate terrestrial habitat was chosen.
2. . A table was prepared to record observations made.
3. The habitat of the study was carefully observed.
4. A list of the plants and animals seen in the area were made.
5. A record of what each organism fed was made
Goat Grass
Bee Flower
Human Goat
Lizard Grasshopper
Bird worm
Grasshopper Leaf
1. Use the information in your table to construct three (3) food chains
Organic matter--->worm--->bird
Grass--->goat--->human
Flower --->bee--->lizard

Discussion of Results:
Feeding relationships show what organisms eat or are eaten by others and through these levels
of organisation in an ecosystem.These can be shown in food chains, which add together to
make food webs for a habitat. A food chain is a linear network of links in a food web starting
from producer organisms and ending at an apex predator species,detritivores,or decomposer
species.A food web is the natural interconnection of food chains and a graphical representation
of what-eats-what in an ecological community.There are levels of feeding within a food chain
called trophic levels, with producers as the first trophic level and consumers/predators in the
following levels.The producers, also first trophic level in the food web, are organisms like grass
and leaf. The next trophic level is primary consumers, otherwise known as herbivores, such as
the goat,bee and grasshopper.Then carnivores, at the third trophic level, for instance lizards and
humans. Omnivores usually sit at the third, and further, trophic levels consisting of the
organisms like the human and bird. Some organisms feed at different trophic levels like birds.
There are consumers who will compete for food at the trophic level/s they happen to fall in.
Along each food chain energy flows further throughout food webs. Through the food chain
leaf-->bee--->lizard,some organisms feed at different trophic levels like the bird. Energy starts
with the primary producer, the leaf, converting sunlight into energy.Some energy gets lost at
each trophic level in the food chain as respiration, heat and/or excretory products. The primary
consumer, the bee, ingests the flower, receiving and converting the remaining energy from the
flower. The lizard, the secondary consumer, consumes the primary consumer, obtaining energy
and, similarly to the primary consumer, converts energy to a usable form, losing more energy in
the chain.
Limitations/Precautions:
It was ensured that what each organism was feeding on was recorded properly.
It was guaranteed that the feeding relationships investigated were in a controlled environment.
Conclusion:
Feeding relationships that exist among the various life forms are responsible for the energy flow
in organisms.
Reflection:
I learnt that there are many feeding relationships that exist.Their relationships are showcased in
a food chain and/or food web which is the interconnection of food chains.
