Volleyball is a game played between two teams. Each team has
a group of six players which they hit a ball back and forth over a high net,
attempting to get the ball to touch the court within the opponents' playing
area before returning it. To avoid this, an opposing player bats the ball up
and toward a teammate before it touches the court surface, that teammate
can then volley it back across the net or bat it to a third teammate who
volleys it across the net. A team can only touch the ball three times before
returning it over the net.
This game was created in 1895 at the YMCA in Holyoke,
Massachusetts by an American named William Morgan to accommodate
people who felt basketball and football to be too aggressive. It was originally
known as “mintonette” and was played in a rectangular court separated into
two equal parts by a line of books in the center. Volleyball gets its name
from the act of throwing or volleying the ball.
Volleyball for men and women was first officially played in the 1964
Tokyo Olympics as a result of the sport's popularity. Volleyball is currently
played according to the International Volleyball Federation's set of rules
(FIVB).
