D. Let’s Study!

Sports is an activity requiring physical action and skills, can be classified as

individual/dual and team sports. In sports, players foster a higher amount of
discipline by following the rules of the game, self-confidence, focus and
passion.

Brief History of Volleyball

Volleyball has come a long way from the dusty-old YMCA gymnasium of
Holyoke, Massachusetts, USA, where the visionary William G. Morgan
invented the sport back in 1895. It’s original name was Mintonette and
replaced by Alfred Halstead. He designed the game to be a combination of
basketball, baseball, tennis, and handball. Volleyball is now one of the big
five international sports.

Nature of the Game

Volleyball is played by two teams of six players on each court divided by a

net. The players are designated as left, center, and right forwards and left,
center, and right backs. When it is a team’s turn to serve, every player
rotates one position clockwise and the right back serves.
The objective of the game is to keep the hit the ball over the net and
to return it to opponent side. The ball is put in play by means of service. The
ball is then volleyed back and forth until one team or the other fails to return
the ball. Teams are permitted three hits to return the ball across the net. A
match consists of the best of five games at the collegiate and high school
levels. Volleyball games are played to 25 points, a fifth and deciding game is
played to 15 points, must win by 3 sets to win the match.

Brief History of Basketball

Basketball began with its invention in 1891 in Springfield,

Massachusetts by Canadian physical education instructor James Naismith as
a less injury-prone sport than football. The game became established fairly
quickly and grew very popular as the 20th century progressed, first in
America and then throughout the world. After basketball became established
in American colleges, the professional game followed. The
American National Basketball Association (NBA), established in 1946, grew
to a multibillion-dollar enterprise by the end of the century, and basketball
became an integral part of American culture.

Nature of the Game

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, most commonly of five
players each, opposing one another on a rectangular court, compete with the primary
objective of shooting a basketball through the defender's hoop high to a backboard at
each end of the court while preventing the opposing team from shooting through their
own hoop. A field goal is worth two points, unless made from behind the three-point
line, when it is worth three. After a foul, timed play stops and the player fouled or
designated to shoot a technical foul is given one or more one-point free throws. The
team with the most points at the end of the game wins, but if regulation play expires
with the score tied, an additional period of play (overtime) is mandated.
Players advance the ball by bouncing it while walking or running (dribbling) or by
passing it to a teammate, both of which require considerable skill. On offense, players
may use a variety of shots—the lay-up, the jump shot, or a dunk; on defense, they may
steal the ball from a dribbler, intercept passes, or block shots; either offense or defense
may collect a rebound, that is, a missed shot that bounces from rim or backboard.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT IN BASKETBALL

 COURT-The size of the court depends on the playing level. The size of the court for
NBA and College games is 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. It is smaller for High School
and Junior High.
 RIM/HOOP- The regulation height above the ground for the rim (hoop) is 10 feet, and
the rim is 18 inches in diameter.
 BACKBOARD- are 6 feet wide (72 inches) by 42 inches tall, with the inner square being
24 inches wide by 18 inches tall.

 BALL- is 29.5 to 30 inches in circumference for men's game and 28.5 inches in
circumference for women's game. It should weigh 18 to 22 ounces. When bounced off 6
feet from the floor, a well inflated ball should bounce 49 to 54 inches in height.

 SHOT CLOCK- The offense is allowed a maximum of 24 seconds to have a ball in hand
before shooting. These 24 seconds are counted on the shot clock. If the offense fails to
shoot a ball that hits the rim, they will lose the possession of the ball to the other team.

Activity 1
FOREARM PASS AND SETTING DRILL
CATCH AND THROW
by pair and against the wall
Objective: To develop Forearm Pass, Proper Stunts, Timing and target
Materials: Ball
Procedure:
 Ask somebody to toss the ball towards you.
 Catch the ball while your body is on a forearm pass position.
 Bring your arms together in front of your body while bending
your knees with one foot in front while catching the ball.
 Do it 20 times in 3 sets.
 After the catching, look for a wall and stand 2 meters away from it.
 Throw the ball against the wall and be ready to bump it. Be sure to bump the ball with
your forearms just above the net.
 Try as many as you can until you can do the forearm pass.
 After the forearm pass do the overhead pass by following the direction given on our
previous lesson.
 It is better if you can do the forearm pass and overhead pass with a partner.
Activity 2
SERVING DRILL
Objective: To develop the skill in underhand service, timing, and arm power
Materials: Ball, volleyball court or any flat surface with a length of 9 meters, rope or net with a
height of 2.24 Meters.
Procedure:
 Stand 3 Meters away from the net or rope hanging 2.24 M high.
 Position your feet while facing the net in an up-and-back stride position with the weight
on the back- right foot while bending you knees.
 If you are right handed hold the ball on your left in front of your body just below your
waist.
 Close your fist on your right and position it slightly behind your body.
 Release the ball, while your right hand is ready to swing and hit the ball as strong as
you can.
 Observed follow through and transferring of weight.
 Do as many as you can. Challenge your self by increasing the distance from 3 Meters to
6 Meters up to 9 Meters which is the actual distance of the service area.
Activity 3
SPIKING DRILL
Catch and Hit
Objective: To develop the skill in spiking, timing for take-off and arm swing.
Materials: Ball, volleyball court or any flat surface with a length of 9 meters, rope or
net with a height of 2.24 M.
Procedure:
 Look for a partner who will toss the ball above the net.
 Position your body 5 to 6 feet away from the net.
 Run to the net as the ball is approaching and jump as high as can while raising
both arms in a ready position to catch the ball while on air.
 Do it as many as you can.
 After familiarizing yourself for the take-off, you are now ready for the attack.
 Instead of catching, you are now going to hit the ball using one arm in an open
palm.
 Swing your arms behind your body to help you to jump higher.
 Then hit the ball with your palm and fingers.
 Make a follow-through by bringing your hitting arms down across your body.
 Do as many as you can.

Activity 2
Know, Want and Learn
Write the things that you still want to know, what do you want to learn, and what you already
learned about the skills in Basketball.

What I know? What I want to learn? What I learned?

Let’s Find Out

Skills in Basketball
Dribbling
is an important skill for all basketball players. This skill will allow you to move up and down the
court, maneuver past defenders and execute plays. Proper dribbling requires ball-handling
skills and knowledge of how to spread your fingers for ball control. It is also best if you know
how to dribble equally well with both hands.
Steps to Dribbling.
 Keep the ball low. The ball should bounce somewhere between your knee and hip. ...
 Be aware of where the ball bounces. If you are in the open court, the ball should be in
front of.
 Keep your body between your defender and the ball.
 Look up.
 Change your speed and don’t stop.
 Pass the ball.
Passing
Passing is another skill that when mastered can help you become a complete basketball
player. Basketball is a team sport that involves finding a teammate who is open for a shot. The
ability to pass the ball to this player can make the difference between scoring and not scoring.
Really great passers are an important part of a basketball team and usually the ones who set
up scoring plays.
Steps to Passing
 Grip the ball on both sides with your fingertips pointed towards your chin.
 Bring the ball towards your chest.
 Take a step with your dominant foot and throw the ball.
 Throw the ball to the target and make a follow through.

Shooting
In order to score points in basketball, you need to shoot the ball into the hoop. This requires
the ability to properly hold and throw the ball into the air toward the basket while avoiding
defenders. A proper shot requires precise aiming, arm extension and lift from the legs. There
are different types of shots you need to learn, including jump shots, layups and free throws.

Steps to Shooting
 Stand approximately four to five feet in front of the basketball hoop.
 Dribble the ball around to get a feel for the bounce and weight of the ball.
 Using an overhand motion shoot the ball towards the hoop from chest level. ...
 Repeat step three but try shooting the ball from waist level.
Jumping
Jumping is another skill that can define how good a basketball player is. Jumping is involved in
offense during the jump ball in the beginning, while taking shots and sometimes while trying to
catch a pass. On defensive you will need the ability to jump when trying to block a shot or a
pass. Being able to out jump your opponent for a rebound also is important.

Steps to Jumping for rebound

 Stand with your feet shoulder width apart, look upward.

 Crouch down and swing your arms backward.
 Swing your arms back forward and upward while extend your legs explosively.
 Time your jump so that you catch the ball at the top of your jump with your arms fully
extended.
 Work on your timing by tossing the ball to yourself.
 Increase your vertical height by strengthening your quadriceps muscles.
 Your exercise routines should focus on fewer repetitions and greater weight.
 Exercise explosively.

Activity 2
Hit It!
Direction:
Materials needed: Ball and cone
Look for a partner. The goal of the of your partner is to hit the ball on the cone with another
ball. You are going to intercept and guard the ball on the cone to prevent your opponent from
hitting it. The offensive team earns a point for every hit. (You may switch roles.

Activity 3

Reach for the goal

Direction:
Materials needed: Ball and goal
Invite your friend to play this game. The opposing team players aim to reach and score a goal
by shooting the ball into it. The defensive team players try to prevent the opposing team from
scoring by intercepting the ball and guarding the goal. The opposing team should reach the
goal at a given time only. The two team switch roles after one team has reached the goal or
when the given time is over.

Five Passes to shoot

Direction:
Materials needed: Ball and goal
The goal of the offensive team players is to make 5 passes without the other team players
intercepting the ball. After 5 passes have been made, the player can get the ball into the goal.
One defensive team player stays near the goal and tries to prevent the ball from getting into
the goal. If the ball is intercepted, the offensive team players should start again from the first
player. After 3 attempts, the teams may switch roles.

5. Can you give me at least 3 rules that you know?
Let’s Find Out
Rules of the Game:
Basketball is a team sport. Two teams of five players each try to score by shooting a ball
through a hoop elevated 10 feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular floor
called the court, and there is a hoop at each end. The court is divided into two main sections
by the mid-court line. If the offensive team puts the ball into play behind the mid-court line, it
has ten seconds to get the ball over the mid-court line. If it doesn't, then the defense gets the
ball. Once the offensive team gets the ball over the mid-court line, it can no longer have
possession of the ball in the area in back of the line. If it does, the defense is awarded the ball.

The ball is moved down the court toward the basket by passing or dribbling. The team with the
ball is called the offense. The team without the ball is called the defense. They try to steal the
ball, contest shots, steal and deflect passes, and garner rebounds.

When a team makes a basket, they score two points and the ball goes to the other team. If a
basket, or field goal, is made outside of the three-point arc, then that basket is worth three
points. A free throw is worth one point. Free throws are awarded to a team according to some
formats involving the number of fouls committed in a half and/or the type of foul committed.
Fouling a shooter always results in two or three free throws being awarded the shooter,
depending upon where he was when he shot. If he was beyond the three-point line, then he
gets three shots. Other types of fouls do not result in free throws being awarded until a certain
number have accumulated during a half. Once that number is reached, then the player who
was fouled is awarded a '1-and-1' opportunity. If he makes his first free throw, he gets to
attempt a second. If he misses the first shot, the ball is live on the rebound.
Each game is divided into sections. All levels have two halves. In college, each half is twenty
minutes long. In high school and below, the halves are divided into eight (and sometimes, six)
minute quarters. In the pros, quarters are twelve minutes long. There is a gap of several
minutes between halves. Gaps between quarters are relatively short. If the score is tied at the
end of regulation, then overtime periods of various lengths are played until a winner emerges.

Each team is assigned a basket or goal to defend. This means that the other basket is their
scoring basket. At halftime, the teams switch goals. The game begins with one player from
either team at center court. A referee will toss the ball up between the two. The player that gets
his hands on the ball will tip it to a teammate. This is called a jump ball. In addition to stealing
the ball from an opposing player, there are other ways for a team to get the ball.

One such way is if the other team commits a foul or violation.

FOULS AND VIOLATIONS
Personal fouls: Personal fouls include any type of illegal physical contact.

 Hitting
 Pushing
 Slapping
 Holding
 Illegal pick/screen -- when an offensive player is moving. When an offensive player
sticks out a limb and makes physical contact with a defender in an attempt to block the path of
the defender.

PERSONAL FOUL PENALTIES: If a player is shooting while being fouled, then he gets two
free throws if his shot doesn't go in, but only one free throw if his shot does go in.

 Three free throws are awarded if the player is fouled while shooting for a three-point
goal and they miss their shot. If a player is fouled while shooting a three-point shot and makes
it anyway, he is awarded one free throw. Thus, he could score four points on the play.

 Inbounds. If fouled while not shooting, the ball is given to the team the foul was
committed upon. They get the ball at the nearest side or baseline, out of bounds, and have 5
seconds to pass the ball onto the court.

 One & one. If the team committing the foul has seven or more fouls in the game, then
the player who was fouled is awarded one free throw. If he makes his first shot, then he is
awarded another free throw.

 Ten or more fouls. If the team committing the foul has ten or more fouls, then the fouled
player receives two free throws.

Charging. An offensive foul that is committed when a player pushes or runs over a defensive
player. The ball is given to the team that the foul was committed upon.

Blocking. Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position
in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket.
Flagrant foul. Violent contact with an opponent. This includes hitting, kicking, and punching.
This type of foul results in free throws plus the offense retaining possession of the ball after the
free throws.

Intentional foul. When a player makes physical contact with another player with no reasonable
effort to steal the ball. It is a judgment call for the officials.

Technical foul. Technical foul. A player or a coach can commit this type of foul. It does not
involve player contact or the ball but is instead about the 'manners' of the game. Foul
language, obscenity, obscene gestures, and even arguing can be considered a technical foul,
as can technical details regarding filling in the scorebook improperly or dunking during warm-
ups.

VIOLATIONS

Walking/Traveling. Taking more than 'a step and a half' without dribbling the ball is traveling.
Moving your pivot foot once you've stopped dribbling is traveling.

Carrying/palming. When a player dribbles the ball with his hand too far to the side of or,
sometimes, even under the ball.

Double Dribble. Dribbling the ball with both hands on the ball at the same time or picking up
the dribble and then dribbling again is a double dribble.

Held ball. Occasionally, two or more opposing players will gain possession of the ball at the
same time. In order to avoid a prolonged and/or violent tussle, the referee stops the action and
awards the ball to one team or the other on a rotating basis.

Goaltending. If a defensive player interferes with a shot while it's on the way down toward the
basket, while it's on the way up toward the basket after having touched the backboard, or while
it's in the cylinder above the rim, it's goaltending and the shot counts. If committed by an
offensive player, it's a violation and the ball is awarded to the opposing team for a throw-in.

Backcourt violation. Once the offense has brought the ball across the mid-court line, they
cannot go back across the line during possession. If they do, the ball is awarded to the other
team to pass inbounds.

Time restrictions. A player passing the ball inbounds has five seconds to pass the ball. If he
does not, then the ball is awarded to the other team. Other time restrictions include the rule
that a player cannot have the ball for more than five seconds when being closely guarded and,
in some states and levels, shot-clock restrictions requiring a team to attempt a shot within a
given time frame.
PLAYER POSITIONS
Center. Centers are generally your tallest players. They generally are positioned near the
basket.

Offensive -- The center's goal is to get open for a pass and to shoot. They are also responsible
for blocking defenders, known as picking or screening, to open other players up for driving to
the basket for a goal. Centers are expected to get some offensive rebounds and put-backs.

Defensive -- On defense, the center's main responsibility is to keep opponents from shooting
by blocking shots and passes in the key area. They also are expected to get a lot of rebounds
because they're taller.

Forward. Your next tallest players will most likely be your forwards. While a forward may be
called upon to play under the hoop, they may also be required to operate in the wings and
corner areas.
