Power Systems-II
Time: 3 Hours Max. Marks: 100
Note : 1. Answer any five questions choosing one full question from each unit.

1 a) Define P.U. value of a quantity. List out any four advantages of P.U. method of
calculation. 6 1
b) With the help of a typical electric power system, explain:
i) One line diagram. ii) Impedance and reactance diagram. 6 1
c) Obtain the per unit reactance diagram of power system shown in figure on a base
of highest rating of the machine.

2 a) What are base values and per unit values? Derive an expression for the per unit
impedance, Zpu for a given base voltage, kVb and base power, MVAb. Hence,
arrive at an expression for the modified per unit impedance Zpunew when refered to
a new set of base values. 8 1
b) Draw the reactance diagram for the power system shown in the fig. Choose a base
of 50 MVA and 13.8 kV on generator 1.

G1 : 20 MVA, 13.8 kV, X” = 20%


G2 : 30 MVA, 18.0 kV, X”= 20%
G3 : 30 MVA, 20.0 kV, X” = 20%
T1 : 25 MVA, 220/13.8 kV, X=10%

Unit-II
3 a) Explain briefly about the transients in a transmission line. 6 2
b) What are symmetrical components? Obtain phase voltages in terms of symmetrical
components. 6 2
c) In a symmetrical star connected impedance system with Z=10  is each phase, a 3-
 unbalanced system of voltages with Va = 2200°, Vb = 200-110°, and Vc =
180110° volt is applied. Determine the line currents if the system is
(i) 4-wire system
(ii) 3-wire system, using symmetrical components. 8 2

4 a) Derive an expression for 3-phase power in terms of symmetrical components. 08 2
b) A 25 MVA, 11 kV generator with X d = 20% is connected through a transformer,
line and a transformer to a bus that supplies a 3 identical motors as shown in
figure. Each motor has X d =25%, X d = 30% on a base of 5 MVA, 6.6 kV. The 3 -
 rating of the step-up transformer is 25 MVA. 11/66 kV with a leakage reactance
of 10% and that of the step-down transformer is 25 MVA. 66/6.6 kV with a
leakage reactance of 10%. The bus voltage at the motors is 6.6 kV. When a 3 - 
fault occurs at the point ‘F’ for the specified fault calculate:
i) The subtransient current in the fault.
ii) The subtransient current in the breaker –B
iii) Momentary current in the breaker – B.
iv) The current to be interrupted by breaker – B in 5 cycles.

Unit-III
5 a) A line to line fault occurs at the terminals of an unloaded synchronous generator.
Derive expression for the fault current and draw the connection of sequence
networks. 10 3
b) A 30MVA, 13.8kV, 3 alternator supplies power to two motors. The motors have
rated inputs of 20MVA and 10MVA, both 12.5kV. The transformers are both
35MVA, 13.2 (delta)/115(star)kV. Determine fault current when a single line to
ground fault occurs at point P as shown in figure. (Assume prefault voltage as
120kV). The ratings of different components are as follows:
Generator: 30MVA, 13.8kV, X1 = X2 = 15%, X0 = 5%, Zn = 2.
Motor M1: 20MVA, 12.5kV, X1 = X2 = 20%, X0 = 5%, Zn = 2.
Motor M2: 10MVA, 12.5kV, X1 = X2 = 20%, X0 = 5%.
Transformers: 35MVA, 13.2 (delta) / 115(star)kV, X = 10%.
Transmission line X1 = X2 = 80, X0=200.

6 a) Derive an expression for fault current when single-line-to-ground fault occurs in


conductor in power system. 6 3
b) Explain about open conductor fault on a power system. 6 3
c) A 50MVA, 11KV, three phase synchronous generator was subjected to different
types of faults. The fault currents are as follows:
SLG fault : 4,200A
LL fault : 2,600A
LL L fault : 2,000 A
The generator neutral is solidly grounded. Find the p.u. values of the sequence
reactances of the generator. 8 3

7 a) With a neat sketch explain the working of a vacuum circuit-breaker. What are the
merits of vacuum circuit breaker? 7 4
b) With a neat circuit diagram and waveforms explain how a current zero can be
produced in a H.V.D.C circuit breaker. 6 4
c) Explain, with a neat circuit diagram and waveforms, any one method of synthetic
testing applicable for testing large capacity circuit-breakers. 7 4

8 a) What is resistance switching? Derive the expression for critical resistance in terms
of system inductance and capacitance which does not lead to transient oscillations 8 4
b) Discuss the properties of SF6 gas (both dielectric and arc quenching properties)
which make it an efficient arc interruption media in circuit-breakers. 6 4
c) For a 132 KV system, the reactance and capacitance upto the location of the circuit
breaker is 3  and 0.015 F respectively.
Calculate: i. Frequency of transient oscillation.
ii. Maximum value of re-striking voltage across the breaker contacts.
iii. Maximum value of RRRV. 6

9 a) Discuss the basic requirements of good protective relying. 6 5
b) Draw the characteristics of the following relays on R-X plane, and compare their
performance when applied to transmission line protection.
Impedance relay. ii. Reactance relay. 8 5
c) The current rating of an overcurrent relay is 5A. Current setting = 200%, TMS =
0.3, CT ratio = 400/5, Fault current = 4000A. Determine the operating time of the
relay. At TMS = 1, operating time at various PSM are:

10 a) Explain why back-up protection is required. Briefly discuss the different methods
of back-up protection. 8 5
b) Explain simple differential protection scheme. What are limitations of such a
scheme? 6 5
c) i) An IDMT over-current relay has a current setting of 125% and has a time-
multiplier-setting of 0.6. The relay is connected in the circuit through a C.T.
having ratio 400/5-A. Calculate the time of operation of the relay, if the fault
current is 3000-A, given the characteristic of the relay as
0.14 (TMS)
TOP = , where TMS is time-multiplier-setting and PSM is plug
