2 a) What are base values and per unit values? Derive an expression for the per unit
impedance, Zpu for a given base voltage, kVb and base power, MVAb. Hence,
arrive at an expression for the modified per unit impedance Zpunew when refered to

b) Draw the reactance diagram for the power system shown in the fig. Choose a base
of 50 MVA and 13.8 kV on generator 1.

5 a) A line to line fault occurs at the terminals of an unloaded synchronous generator.
Derive expression for the fault current and draw the connection of sequence

b) A 30MVA, 13.8kV, 3 alternator supplies power to two motors. The motors have
rated inputs of 20MVA and 10MVA, both 12.5kV. The transformers are both
35MVA, 13.2 (delta)/115(star)kV. Determine fault current when a single line to
ground fault occurs at point P as shown in figure. (Assume prefault voltage as
120kV). The ratings of different components are as follows:
Generator: 30MVA, 13.8kV, X1 = X2 = 15%, X0 = 5%, Zn = 2.
Motor M1: 20MVA, 12.5kV, X1 = X2 = 20%, X0 = 5%, Zn = 2.
Motor M2: 10MVA, 12.5kV, X1 = X2 = 20%, X0 = 5%.
Transformers: 35MVA, 13.2 (delta) / 115(star)kV, X = 10%.
Transmission line X1 = X2 = 80, X0=200.

8 a) What is resistance switching? Derive the expression for critical resistance in terms
of system inductance and capacitance which does not lead to transient oscillations 8 4
b) Discuss the properties of SF6 gas (both dielectric and arc quenching properties)
which make it an efficient arc interruption media in circuit-breakers. 6 4
c) For a 132 KV system, the reactance and capacitance upto the location of the circuit
breaker is 3 and 0.015 F respectively.
Calculate: i. Frequency of transient oscillation.
ii. Maximum value of re-striking voltage across the breaker contacts.

10 a) Explain why back-up protection is required. Briefly discuss the different methods

c) i) An IDMT over-current relay has a current setting of 125% and has a time-
multiplier-setting of 0.6. The relay is connected in the circuit through a C.T.
having ratio 400/5-A. Calculate the time of operation of the relay, if the fault
current is 3000-A, given the characteristic of the relay as
