Operational Definition of Terms Groundwater

Water pollution is a major issue in the Philippines that affects public health and the environment. Various factors contribute to water pollution, including industrial and agricultural waste, sewage, mining activities, and marine dumping. This pollution has led to increased waterborne diseases and bioaccumulation of toxins in humans and other animals. It also damages aquatic life and ecosystems through oxygen depletion and changes to water properties. Proper management of pollution from all sources is needed to protect water resources and public health.

Operational Definition of Terms

Groundwater

— Underground water in an aquifer, used for drinking water in 75 percent of Minnesota

households. The subsurface water supply in the saturated zone below the level of the water table.

Runoff

— That portion of precipitation or irrigation water that flows off a field or paved area and enters

surface water.

Watershed

— The surrounding land area that drains into a lake, river or river system.
Water Pollution

INTRODUCTION

Water is one of the renewable resources essential for sustaining all forms of life, food

production, economic development, and for general well-being. It is impossible to substitute for

most of its uses, difficult to de pollute, expensive to transport and it is truly a unique gift to

mankind from nature. Everybody knows humans needs pure drinking water to sustain life. The

water pollution problem in Philippines is beginning to get out of hand. There is a lot of natural

resources that are needed to service, but none can be obtain without water.

Water is the main source of life. We all need clean water as we all know that it is used for

many things and it is a very important things in life. Because who in the world can live this

world without water. Water plays a major role in our day to day life cycle and it is a part and

parcel of every human living in the planet Earth. Our Earth contains 70% of water which should

be sufficient for the growth of every human life form.

Water pollution is a huge issue around the world because it affects everyone. No one can

live without water, and that water is contaminated, we can't survive. Water pollution can be

caused by the dumping of toxic chemicals, and even acid rain. We often take advantage of our

daily necessities, whether that be food, water, clothes, or households appliances.

A. CAUSES OF WATER POLLUTION

1. Industrial waste

Industries produce a huge amount of waste which contains toxic chemicals and pollutants which

can cause air pollution and damage to us and our environment. They contain pollutants such as

lead, mercury, sulfur, asbestos, nitrates, and many other harmful chemicals.

2. Sewage and wastewater

The sewage and wastewater that is produced by each household is chemically treated and

released into the sea with fresh water. The sewage water carries harmful bacteria and chemicals

that can cause serious health problems. Pathogens are known as a common water pollutant; The

sewers of cities house several pathogens and thereby diseases.

3. Mining activities

Mining is the process of crushing the rock and extracting coal and other minerals from

underground. These elements when extracted in the raw form contains harmful chemicals and

can increase the number of toxic elements when mixed up with water which may result in health

problems.

4. Marine dumping

The garbage produced by each household in the form of paper, aluminum, rubber, glass, plastic,

food is collected and deposited into the sea in some countries. These items take from 2 weeks to

200 years to decompose. When such items enter the sea, they not only cause water pollution but

also harm animals in the sea.

B. SOURCES OF WATER

Sources of water in the Philippines suffer from a range of contaminants . Industrial water

waste contains chemical pollutants such as chromium, cadmium, lead, mercury, and

cyanide.TI1ese pollutants persist over long periods of time and are often referred to as stock

pollutants, but their origins from industrial sources also allow them to be characterized as point-

source pollution. Other harmful wastes, such as decayed plants, livestock manure, dead animals,

soil runoff, and residue, are organic wastes that have contributed to the Philippines' pollution

problem. Because they do not originate from industrial sources, these specific pollutants are

commonly called nonpoint source pollution. Other water pollutants, which exacerbate the

Philippines' water crisis are accidental oil and chemical spills and illegal dumping of waste. The

presence of these pollutions has deeply impacted the daily lives of Filipino people.
C. IMPLICATION OF WATER POLLUTION

As time passes, the health of the Filipino people e continues to suffer. Within a five-year

span, exposure to waterborne contaminants were the cause of approximately one third of

illnesses in the Philippines . An abundance of waterborne viruses and bacteria in drinking water

leads to the contraction of afflictions such as diarrhea, cholera, and various skin diseases .People,

as well as other animals, also experience the buildup of toxins over time within the fatty tissue of

their bodies, known as bioaccumulation. In urban areas with inadequate sewage systems, cancer

mortality rates are high. Aside from its impacts on public health , water pollution also causes

irreversible damage to the environment. A common problem is eutrophication, whicl.1 occurs

when organic materials deposited within the water deplete the oxygen available, causing

anaerobic algae blooms. Other pollutants stimulate the consumption of oxygen, which creates

stress on specific organisms, while decreasing the overall ability to survive. The lack of oxygen

available within the lakes, rivers, ponds, and streams causes river-dwelling creatures, such as

fish, to decrease, and species who rely on streams to become endangered . Pollutants can also

change the physical properties of water itself.

CONCLUSION

I therefore conclude that water pollution caused by many different factors, such as toxic

waste. Water pollution can highly affects the health of aquatic life to contribute taste and odor

problems treated drinking water. Because once the waste quality as well. So we should educate

our self and prevent wasting things in every were, because in every damage we've done it may

cause in out life. We rather have clean water than a large amount water live on.
Body/ History

Water Pollution is an important factor that it is playing a role in effecting and destroying

the health and lives of many people in the Philippines. People of the Philippines always ignore

this fact and given no importance. Water Pollution has become a serious concern for over a

century in industrial and agricultural activities continue to dispose of wastes in river, lakes and

ocean the increasing levels of water pollution have continued to harm the environment and food

supplies in the Philippines.

One of the biggest problems that industrial countries face is waste disposal. Waste find its

way into water sources such as rivers, lakes and oceans leading to water pollution. Dangerous

water pollution include industrial chemical pathogens inorganic material such as polyethylene,

and organic substances. Water pollution is responsible for causing many waterborne diseases like

cholera and dysentery. The biggest problem with these infections is that they spread quickly

usually affecting people who drink water from a contaminated source. Water pollution also

greatly affects sea animals as it contains toxic chemical.

Types of Water Pollution

There are many types of water pollution because water comes from many sources. Here

are few types of water pollution.

Ground water pollution

When humans apply pesticides and chemicals to soils, they are washed deep into the ground by

rainwater. This gets to underground water, causing poll ution underground. This means when we

dig wells and bore holes to get water from underground, it needs to be checked for ground water

pollution.

Oil Spillage

Oil spills usually have only a localized effect on wildlife but can spread for miles. The oil can

cause the death to many fish and get stuck to the feathers of seabirds causing them to lose their

ability to fly.

Surface water pollution

Surface water includes natural water found on the earth's surface, like rivers, lakes, lagoons and

oceans. Hazardous substances coming into contact with this surface water, dissolving or mixing

physically with the water can be called surface water pollution.

Effect of Water Pollution

The effects of water pollution are wide ranging and these are highly dependent upon the

type of chemicals that are dumped into the major water sources. Water pollution has an adverse

effect on plants and creatures living in the water in nearly all situations the effect is destructive

not only to the areas and individual species but also to the natural biological population.

Effective control of urban runoff involves reducing the velocity and flow of storm water

as well as reducing pollutants discharges. Water pollution as one of the main environmental

problems that can present a danger far that existence of life on earth in the next decade. In

addition, the water pollution also continue to struggle with pollution problem.
