Appreciation of the Poem

1.1. A Teenager’s Prayer

It is a Prayer by Teenager. Teenage is very important age in everyone's life. The poet tells that the
God can show him proper way or the God in the poem is the

Why I like/dislike the Poem I like the poem because it guides me for the right path of life. It makes me
aware of positive and negative things.

From the city to my village,

I want to sow many, Small, small moons of light.

This poem is a request of a child to the moon. The child requests it to give him one or

two basketful of seeds of moonlight. He wishes to sow the small moons of light along Theme/Central Idea the
roads from city to village. So his father will come home early and tell him stories.
Poet describes villager’s life which is full of dangers and child’s love for his father.

The poem has a social message that we should understand the problems and dangers in

Why I like/dislike the Poem Simplicity and serenity of the poem appeal me most. The poem has visual or pictorial
quality which also appeals the reader. Innocence of the village boy who is aware about
difficulties of the villagers and his eagerness to find a solution in his own way appeal
me most.

Poet Pablo Neruda. He won Nobel Prize in 1971. Rhyme Scheme It is
a free verse poem hence no rhyme scheme. Blank verse poem.

Theme/Central Idea The poet is telling us to do new things everyday and avoid negative thoughts
and always be positive. We should enjoy each and every moment of our life. Trust yourself and love
what you do.

used direct comparison. According to the poet the life itself is a sound.)

Theme/Central Idea The central theme of the poem is the confusion between identical twins and
because of this what can a problem they had whole life is explained.

The poet uses figures of speech like Alliteration, Hyperbole and Pun.
1) Alliteration: “It puzzled all our kith and kin” (Sound of K is repeated)

It is a lyric poem. It is written in a simple and humorous language to create the

The central idea of this poem is that success comes from self-control and true

My favourite is -

This poem is about taking time to appreciate the beauty and wonder of nature. The
Theme/Central Idea theme revolves around the poet's philosophy, the stranger here is really sad and would
love to stay in the woods where he is all alone (except his horse) away from the rest of
the world.

The poem is full of many poetic devices.

a) Alliteration:-"The woods are lovely dark and deep"(The Sound 'd' is repeated)

Figures of Speech b) personification:- "My little horse must think it queer“

The horse in the poem is the example of personification; who is portrayed here as to
"think" and "ask" just like a human being.

Special Features The poem is a short lyric of four regular stanzas, each consisting of four lines. The
poem is an interior monologue. It is full of symbolism. The horse, the woods, the
darkness, distance (miles) are all very known images are used here as Symbols.
Why I like/dislike the I like the poem because of its deceptive lucid language. The poet suggests the basic
Poem truths and profound thoughts of human life. It reflects Robert Frosts healthy vision of life to always
look forward positively.

Its rhyme Scheme is “aabbcc” The poem is written in couplets.

My favourite lines -
Favourite line “O God forgive me when I whine
I’m blessed, indeed, the world is mine”

The central idea of the poem is that all of us should look at life as a blessing
Theme/Central Idea because we are blessed with the ability to walk, talk, hear and see. The
speaker understands the importance of being able to walk, listen and see when he finds a
lame girl, a deaf lad and a blind boy.

b) Repetition:- "O God, forgive me when I whine’’

Special Features This poem celebrates the gifts of life. The speakers feels happy and thanks God for
giving him ability to walk, listen and see. This is an optimistic poem. It is divided
into four stanzas. Three of them are equal in length and the last stanza is little
different. The last stanza contains a triplet and a couplet.

Why I like/dislike the I like the poem because it gives a very good message that we should be optimistic
Poem in life. We should be thankful t God for blessing us with physical abilities to
enjoy the life.
4.3. "O Captain! My Captain!"

Poet The poem is Written by Walt Whitman

Rhyme Scheme The rhyme Scheme is “aabb cded”


My favourite lines -
Favourite line “O Captain! My Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;”

The poet is trying to communicate with readers his acknowledgement and love for

President Lincoln and his grief of his death in O Captain! My Captain! The poem
Theme/Central Idea takes the form of an ode characterized by sustained noble sentiment and appropriate
dignity of style. Walt Whitman speaks not only for himself, but for his whole nation

America as Abraham Lincoln is the savior of their nation, and they embrace him as
their hero.

The poet used the figures of speech

b) Apostrophe:- "O God, forgive me when I whine; “

The poem mourns the death of captain. The poet does not feel joy of victory though
Special Features all other are happy. He laments the death of his captain. This is an elegy (a mournful
song). It is a poem of three octaves. Each octave can be divided into two quatrains
because of the distinct rhyme scheme.

Why I like/dislike the Poem I like the poem because of its meaning and it is related to the civil war. The poet has
praised the spirit of sacrifice in the course of freedom and justice.
