UNIT 4-Self-Learning Task #6

The document discusses tips for building a positive school culture. It provides examples of both good and bad tips, and analyzes whether each tip would effectively promote a positive culture or not. For example, it says a "No Talking" rule is too vague and restrictive, while a "Quiet Area" sign respects that some students need silence. It also emphasizes the importance of specific, constructive feedback rather than vague praise. Overall, the document evaluates different strategies and advocates those that foster an inclusive, supportive environment for all students and teachers.

UNIT 4 – THE TEACHER AS SCHOOL CULTURE CATALYST

SELF-LEARNING TASK # 6
Observe, Write and Defend

Name: Vergara, Kimberly D. Prog/Yr/Sec: BEEd 2-A

Date: July 02, 2022

Answer as directed:

1. Are the following items good tips in building positive culture? Defend your answer. If it is not so
good tip, replace it with good one.

A. “No Taking” as classroom rule # 1 imposed by teacher.

This classroom regulation, in my opinion, does not promote the development of a healthy
culture. This is not a helpful tip because it is merely a one-sided and vague regulation.
The learner's potential, interests, and capacities may be constrained as a result of this
regulation. Instead of implementing a “No Talking” rule, it is better to enforce a particular
rule such as “Don’t talk when the instructor is talking” or "Raise your hand if you have
any reservations."

b. If some students say they need a quiet area to work in at times, they make a sign like, “Quiet
Area, Brains at Work.”
This is an excellent strategy for developing a healthy culture since there are
instances when a classroom becomes too rowdy and impolite. As a result, a sign with appropriate
terms such as "Quiet Area, Brains at Work" might make your peers aware of your goals and
observe it politely.

c. “We talked about this yesterday. Did you forget?” You had this so well yesterday. I
know you can get it today.

This phrase is the polar opposite of encouraging students. This is not a good advice for
developing a positive culture in my opinion since some students forget a lesson they do
not completely comprehend. This expression shows that the teacher is annoyed because
the pupil did not achieve the desired outcomes. It is OK to remind the student that he or
she performed well the previous day, but it is not acceptable to question the obvious since
it may cause them to doubt themselves even more.
d. Do you believe in your own ability to learn and grow? Do you believe it is your obligation as a
teacher to model learning and growing?
Yes, this is excellent advice for cultivating a good culture since it assists instructors
in analyzing their own thinking and acts as a tool for self-reflection. This is a very important
component of what can make us good instructors. It enables us to think deeply about our
teaching; what we do in the classroom, why we do it, and why it works, helping us to identify any
changes and improvements we could make.

e. The teacher wrote, “nice job” on a student’s sketch of an orange. No, it is not a beneficial idea for
fostering a positive culture since, while the phrase "great work" was a positive response to a
student's production, it is not a precise, comprehensive advice.
Feedback that is excessively broad and generalized does not assist in encouraging
a student's individual conduct. Teachers should offer specific and consistent feedback on each
student's work so that they may emphasize where they excelled and motivate them to do better
the following time.

f. Come up with a Question and Answer Wall. Here students post the academic question they
want answered within the month with their name on it. Anybody can gice an answer with
his/her name written.

Definitely, this is a fantastic strategy for fostering a positive culture since it

promotes every student's independence and involvement in academic learning by allowing them
to ask and answer questions. This is a great way to recognize their ideas and comments while
also demonstrating that you are willing to listen and offer feedback; these small gestures will feel
valued.  Developing an open and honest conversation will result in a strong intellectual
connection between students and teachers, which is vital in developing a great school
environment.
2. Choose a school. Determine the presence of any of the 12 practices of a positive school
culture in that school by noting down conversations, comments, activities that you
hear/observe in that school of your choice.
