10 Fan Control

The fan control feature electronically controls engine cooling fan activation and provides a load for vehicle retardation, when
required. Fan controls are designed to optimally control the engine cooling fan(s) based on engine cooling requirements. Fan
controls are designed to use other system inputs such as A/C pressure switches and operator requested fan operation.
The fan can be activated to cool the engine, provide additional power for engine brakes, for HVAC, or by manually activating the
fan.

Feature Operation
The engine continuously monitors and compares the coolant and intake manifold air temperature, engine torque, engine
operation mode, and various optional inputs to calibrated levels stored within the engine. These limits are configured based on
the application.
When these temperature levels exceed the preset fan ON temperature value, the engine will enable the fan control output(s)
that activate the fan. The fan will remain on, cooling the engine with the increased air flow until the temperature levels reach the
preset fan OFF temperature.
The engine provides fan control for three different fan configurations:
• Single-speed fan (two outputs)
• Single-speed fan (one output)
• Variable speed fan with fan speed feedback

Single-Speed Fan
The two output fan must be used if the current exceeds 2A. The two outputs (Fan Control #1 and Fan Control #2) must be wired
together. Single-speed fan control uses one or two digital outputs to drive a single-speed fan. Fan Control #1 and #2 are open
circuit to turn the fan ON. The fan will remain ON for a minimum of 30 seconds. The fan output will not be enabled until five
seconds after the engine has started.

NOTE: Fan output circuits are designed to sink no more than 2.0 A (DC) current.

Fan Control #1 and #2 are open circuit when at least one of the following conditions occur:
• Coolant temperature above preset set levels;
• intake manifold temperature above preset levels;
• air conditioner is active;
• coolant or intake manifold air temperature sensor fails;
• engine brake is active at high level;
• fan control override switch is grounded (ON); or
• PTO is enabled and active (optional).

Inputs and Outputs

The fan control feature receives the following inputs:

• Ignition switch status

• Engine coolant temperature

• Transmission coolant temperature

• Engine speed
• A/C fan request percentage
• Engine fan manual request switch
The fan control feature has the following outputs:

• Engine fan
• Engine fan switch indicator (on the dash)

Feature Interactions
HVAC Fan Request
HVAC fan requests are processed by the HVAC controller. The controller sends the fan request to the CPC, which routes the
request to the MCM via powertrain CAN to activate the fan. The fan percent for this feature is received as part of the input, and
is processed directly by the fan logic.

Fan Override Switch

When the fan override switch is enabled, the CPC receives a signal via chassis CAN. When the chassis CAN signal is above
0% for variable speed fans, or 50% for single speed fans. The fan percent for this feature is determined by calibration parameter
thm_p_ThmConf2.FanEnOnOvrActvPct_u8. Any multiplexed fan manual override switch input is evaluated at the calibrated fan
target percent, regardless of the level of fan requested, as long as the request is above 0%.

Fan ON with Engine Brake

The engine fan will activate when the following conditions are true for 10 seconds:

• Engine brake level is high;

• intake temperature is greater than 32°F (0°C); and
• fan for engine brake parameter is enabled.
This option can be selected in the MCM through DiagnosticLink (parameter: Dyn Fan Brake Enable), and is disabled by default.

Air Intake Temperature

The intake manifold temperature is 176°F (80°C) for the fan to turn ON. The fan OFF intake manifold temperature is 167°F
(75°C).
The variable speed fan has a closed loop control at 194°F (90 deg°C). The fan can become active up to 41°F (5 deg°C) before
the control point. The fan can shut off up to 41°F (5 deg°C) below the control point.
If the fan is activated because of the intake temperature, the MCM will not request the fan to turn on when the intake
temperature is less than 149°F (65°C).

Fan On for PTO

Th fan on for PTO feature enables the engine to request the fan when the PTO is active. The fan is then deactivated when any
of the activation conditions are no longer satisfied.
The activation of the fan is delayed by calibration parameter thm_p_ThmConf2.FanEnOnPtoDelayTime_u8. The actual
commanded fan percent for this feature is determined by calibration parameter thm_p_ThmConf2.FanEnOnPtoActvPct_u8.
If a configured and enabled PTO is no longer active, the CPC will no longer request the engine cooling fan even if this feature is
enabled.

Transmission Oil Cooling

For vehicles equipped with DT12 or Allison automatic transmissions with transmission oil coolers, the fan is parameterized to
activate to provide oil cooling.
The CPC measures coolant temperature using the following parameters:
• HDEP coolant inlet temperature
: PTCAN::MCM_C06::CoolTempIn_Cval_PT
• MDEG coolant outlet temperature
: PTCAN::MCM_C06::CoolTempOut_Cval_PT
Thermostat position parameters are set in production based on engine type. The CPC calculates thermostat position to be open
when the engine coolant temperature is greater than the parameterized thermostat open temperature, and closed when the
engine coolant temperature is less than or equal to the parameterized thermostat close temperature.
The CPC monitors the transmission oil temperature and signals the engine cooling fan to engage when the following conditions
are met:
• Parameter thm_p_ThmConf2.TxOilTempCtrlEnable_u8 is enabled;
• the fan transition ratio is greater than zero;
• the transmission oil temperature is available and valid;
• the maximum fan speed threshold is greater than 0; and
• the thermostat is open, and based on thermostat position.
