Assignment#04

Q1: What social factors affect your family life? In what ways is your family
life different from that of your grandparents when they were your age?

There are a number of things that have affect on our family life. Our social class, economic value
or lack of, culture, religion, ethnicity, as well as our family type and structure. As family is the
only institution that can provide primary socialisation, all of the above factors will shape the
individuals within the household.

• The culture will potentially shape the communication dynamic between myself and
my parents.
• It is a norm in our culture that parents are respected and children are seen and not
heard but obviously this not always the case.
• There is an understanding that as long as parents are providing for their children
financially then they have played their due roles.
• However, the lack of intimacy can result in conflict with parents and issues with
creating other relationships outside of the household.

And as for my grandparent’s life, it was very different from us. As they didn’t have much
facilities like us. They didn’t have the availability of phones or internet so they spent most of
their time with family or with their friends. They were not lazy like us, they had to go to the
forests to collect woods for cooking as they didn’t have electricity or gas.

Q2: Explain the difference between bilateral and unilateral descent. Using
your own association with kinship, explain which type of descent applies to
you?

Bilateral Descent

Since bilateral descent is common to most of us, Bilateral Descent a system of descent or
inheritance in which both the male and the female lines of descent are recognized. In short,
bilateral descent ties a person to the biological family of both his/her mother and father.
Unilateral Descent

Pretty much opposite of bilateral descent is unilateral descent. As the name 'unilateral'
suggests, with 'uni' meaning 'one' as in 'unicorn' or 'unicycle,' unilateral descent is a kinship
system in which descent is traced through only one gender. To really state it simply, it's a
family tree that is only tracked through men or women of the family, but not both.

For me it’s Bilateral Descent, as in our family relations from both sides are recognized. As
relations from both sides are important in our family and on special occasions relatives from
both sides join.
