👉🏻 Both Forest Cover and Recorded Forest Area (RFA) describe the extent of forest but have different meanings.
👉🏻 The 'Forest Cover' refers to all tree patches that have canopy density of more than 10% and area of one hectare
or more in size, irrespective of land use, legal status and ownership. It may include orchards, bamboo, and palms
etc. and is assessed through remote sensing.
👉🏻 The 'Recorded Forest Area' or 'Forest Area' refers to all the geographical areas recorded as 'Forests' in
government records irrespective of the actual trees growing on such lands. RFA mainly comprises of Reserved

Forests (RF) and Protected Forests (PF) and Unclassed Forests notified under Indian Forest Act, 1927 or respective

State Forest Acts. Additionally, RFA may also include all such areas, which have been recorded as 'Forest' in the

✓ Total mangrove cover in the country is 4,992 sq. km. (0.15 % of the
country's total geographical area).
✓ Top 5 States / UTs in Mangrove cover: West Bengal (2114 sq. km)
Gujarat (1175 sq. km), Andaman & Nicobar Islands (616 sq. km),
Andhra Pradesh (405 sq. km) and Maharashtra (324 sq. km)
