CHAPTER 1: FUNCTIONS
A Brief History of Function
In reviewing the history of function, we are made aware of the tendency of mathematician
to extend and generalize a concept. The word function appears to have been first used by LEIBNEZ
in 1694 to stand for any quantity associated with a curve. It was again Leibnez who first used the
terms abscissa and ordinate. By 1718, JOHAN BERNOULLI considered a function any expression
made up of constants and a variable. Later in the same century, EULER, came to regard a function as
any equation made up of constants and variables. Euler made extensive use of the extremely
important notation f(x) although the origin is generally attributed to deviant (1734).
In many real-life situations, there are quantities that depend on one or more variables. For
example, the amount of salary an employee receives in a month depends on the number of days he
or she works, the monthly electricity bill of a household is determined by the number of kilowatts it
consumed for a given month. In mathematics, the relationship between two distinct quantities
based on a definite rule is referred to as FUNCTION.
QUESTION? What makes a function distinct from a relation? Are all functions considered relations?
Or, are all relations considered functions?

Definition: A function is a relation defined as a set of ordered pairs (x, y) where no two or more
distinct ordered pairs have tha same first element (x); that is , every value of x corresponds to a
unique value of y. A function can be named using any letter of the English alphabeth.
A relation is a rule that relates values from a set of values ( called the domain) to a second
set of values (called the range).
VERTICAL LINE TEST: A graph represents a function if and only if each vertical line intersects the
graph at most once.
Identify the domain for each relation using set builder notation.

Evaluating Functions
To evaluate a function is to:
Replace ( substitute ) its variable with a given number or
expression.
Like in this example:
Example: evaluate the function f(x) = 2x+4 for x=5
Just replace the variable "x" with "5":
f( 5 ) = 2× 5 + 4 = 14
Example: Evaluate the ff. functions at x= 1.5
