FINAL TERM EXAMINATION 2021-22

CLASS XI
SUBJECT – PHYSICS (042)
SUBJECTIVE

Maximum Marks: 40 Marks Time Allowed: 2 Hours

General Instructions:
(1) All questions are compulsory. There are 15 questions in all.
(2) This question paper has two sections: Section A and Section B.
(3) Section A consists of 7 short answer questions of 2 marks each and 7 short answer
questions of 3 marks each and Section B contains a long answer question of 5 marks .
(4) There is no overall choice. However internal choice is provided. You have to attempt
only one of the choices in such questions.

Sr. Marks
No.
Section – A
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices, attempt
anyone.
1 Using the law of equipartition of energy, obtain the ratio of CP and CV for a 2
diatomic gas.
2 Draw stress vs strain graph for (i) steel and (ii) glass. Also define breaking 2
point.
3 A vibrating simple pendulum of period T is placed in a lift which is 2
decelerating upwards. What will be the effect on the time period? Justify
your answer
OR
A spring of force constant 1200 N/m is mounted on a smooth horizontal
table. A mass of 3kg attached to the free end of the spring is compressed to a
distance of 2cm and released. With what velocity will the mass hit a block
kept at a distance of 2cm from equilibrium point if amplitude of oscillation
of the spring is 3cm.
4 Show that the coefficient of area expansion of a rectangular sheet of solid is 2
twice its coefficient of linear expansion.
5 How can the knowledge of elasticity be used to estimate the maximum 2
height of a mountain on earth?

6 Two vessels of different materials are identical in size and wall-thickness. 2
They are filled with equal quantities of ice at 0°C. If the ice melts completely
in 10 and 25 minutes respectively, compare the coefficients of thermal
conductivity of the materials of the vessels.
7 A pipe, 30 cm long, is open at both ends. Which harmonic mode of the pipe 2
resonates at 2.2 kHz source? Take the speed of sound in air as 330m/s.
OR
Two tuning forks A and B when sounded together give 4 beats per second.
The frequency of A is 480 Hz. When B is filed and the two forks are
sounded together, 4 beats per second are heard again. Find the frequency of
B before it was filed?
8 Apply Bernoulli’s principle to determine the speed of efflux from the 3
side of a container both when its top is closed and open. Hence derive
Torricelli’s law.
OR

What is a venturimeter? Describe its construction and working.

9 Draw P-V diagram for a system undergoing cyclic process in the order A to 3
B, B to C and C to A. The coordinates of A, B and C are respectively (4,1)),
(2,4) and (2,1). Pressure is in N/m2 and volume in litres. Also calculate the
work done during the process from A to B and B to C.

10 Prove that the average kinetic energy of a molecule of an ideal gas is directly 3
proportional to the absolute temperature of the gas.
OR
Derive an expression for pressure exerted by an ideal gas using the kinetic
theory of gases.
11 Draw a schematic diagram of a refrigerator. Write the steps through which 3
the working substance of a refrigerator undergoes.
12 A thin wire is bent in the form of ring of diameter 3 cm. The ring is placed 3
horizontally on the surface of soap solution and then raised up slowly. How
much upward force is necessary to break the film formed between the ring
and the solution? Surface tension of soap solution is 3 x 10-2 N/m.
13 Draw a graph depicting variation of restoring force with displacement for a 3
body undergoing SHM. How time period of SHM can be determined using
the graph if mass of the body is given.
14 Explain how does a body attain a terminal velocity when it is dropped from
rest in a viscous medium. Also derive an expression for terminal velocity.
Section – B
All questions are compulsory. In case of internal choices, attempt any
one.

15 Write the Newton’s formula for speed of a longitudinal wave in an ideal gas. 5
What corrections were made by Laplace in this formula and why? Hence,
deduce the modified formula for speed of sound.
OR
What are stationary waves? Prove that in open organ pipe both even and odd
harmonics are produced while in closed organ pipe only odd harmonics are
produced.
