HOW TO BECOME A SDM OFFICER
A Sub-Divisional Magistrate is a title which is sometimes given to the
head official of a district subdivision, an administrative officer that is sometimes below the level of district, depending on a country's government structure. SDM is generally an officer of state civil service. The Sub-Divisional Officer is the chief civil officer of the sub- division. In fact, he is a miniature Deputy Commissioner of the sub- division. He is competent to correspond direct with the government and other departments on routine matters. He has to perform executive, magisterial and revenue duties. His executive duties pertain to the maintenance of law an order, development, local bodies, motor taxation, passport, issue and renewal of arms licenses, Sub-divisional establishment, etc. As Sub-Divisional Magistrate, he enforces security measures for the maintenance of Law and Order and exercises judicial powers under certain sections of the preventive chapters of the code of Criminal Procedure. An appeal from the orders of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate in such cases lies with the District and Sessions Judge. In the revenue matters he is Assistant collector Grade I. but under certain Acts, the powers of collector have been delegated to him. According to this section in India’s legal system, the SDM is the subordinate of the district magistrate. The core responsibility of the sub-divisional magistrate is to look after the law management in the particular district they are posted. It is the prime function where they empower their role over executive magistrate. In the magisterial department, a sub- divisional magistrate can set an effective enquiry over the unnatural death of women before the police record and assist in the police enquiry for deaths in police lock-ups and jails. During any natural calamity like floods, earthquakes, riots, or fire incidents, the sub-divisional magistrate is responsible for submitting the descriptive reports to the government Catastrophe management: The sub-divisional magistrate holds the prime responsibility for the safety and security of the public during any disaster or calamity. To provide rehabilitation and relief to the public, disaster management and spread awareness during any catastrophe. It is the responsibility of the sub-divisional magistrate to monitor the preparations and facilities for disaster management. After that, you have to apply for the form of an exam called the UPSC civil services exam. You have to sit in all the stages of the UPSC civil services exam and qualify for each of them. After that, you have to fulfil all the eligibility criteria that are required to become an IAS officer i.e. SDM. it is crystal clear that to become an SDM you have to become an IAS officer first. To become an IAS Officer you must qualify for Civil Service Exam (CSE) conducted by Union Public Service Commission. To apply for the UPSC exam you must be eligible for some criteria. The candidate should hold a graduation degree from any university in India. A graduation degree is a must to become SDM. Even the students appearing for the final year of graduation can apply for the Civil Services Exam. The first posting after becoming an IAS Officer is that of an SDM. The candidate to be eligible for the exam should at least be 21 years of age. The maximum limit for the examination is up to 32 years as on 1st August 2020. The relaxation for the SC/ST candidates is 5 years. Thus, the maximum limit extends to 37 years. 3 years of relaxation for OBC and the age limit is relaxed up to 35 years. 3 years of relaxation for a person in defense services, who is not able to fulfill the operation with any foreign country. 5 years of relaxation for ex-servicemen which includes commissioned officers, ECO’s/SSC’s Atlas of 45 years of military service as on 1st August 2020 and have been released. 10 years of examination for handicapped, blind, deaf, a person suffering from autism any other intellectual disability, locomotor disability, and multiple other disabilities. The maximum number of attempts every candidate in the General Category is allowed is 6 attempts. Aspirants must be a citizen of India in order to become Sub Divisional Magistrates (SDM). To conclude, an IAS officer’s prime responsibility as a sub-divisional magistrate provides them with the core knowledge of the administrative system from the ground level operation, management, and responsibilities. The roles and power of the SDM make him in charge of the welfare and development program of the particular district. The significant responsibility of the SDM is to assist the district magistrate with the clerical job with other operative management and control. He attains the power to process the order for arrest, investigation, tear gas and curfew in the district as per the situation.
