Session 2
Discovering Hell’s Best Kept Secret
1. Open in prayer
2. How to Share the Gospel—The Law Part 1
Questions—
What is the Law? (Ex. 20:1-17)
What is it‘s purpose? (Rm. 3:19)
What role if any should it play in sharing the Gospel?
(Rm. 3:20)
The following guide will help you fulfill the true purpose of the
Law in regards to sharing the Gospel.
The Law
Word of Wisdom—
―I do not believe that any man can preach the Gospel who does not
preach the Law. The Law is the needle, and you cannot draw the
silken thread of the Gospel through a man‘s heart unless you first
send the needle of the Law to make way for it.‖ – Charles
Spurgeon
―According to God‘s standard (the Ten Commandments)
are you a good person?‖
NOTE:
Some people are going to say ―Yes‖ for the following
reasons—
―God doesn‘t care about my ‗little‘ sins.‖
―I‘m still better than most people I know.‖
―God knows how sincere I am, He knows my
heart.‖
―The Court‖
―If you were standing before a judge and you had
been found guilty of committing a crime (breaking
and entering; assault etc) do you think he would
dismiss the charges if you used the same excuses—
―I didn‘t steal that much from them.‖
―At least I didn‘t physically hurt anyone like
what‘s his name did.‖
―I‘m actually a good person judge, please let
me go.‖
NOTE:
If they still refuse to admit that they are not good and in
fact sinners according to God‘s standard it is essentially impossible
to proceed because they will never see their need for Christ.
Luke 5:32
I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to
repentance."
―If God were to judge you by His standard (the Ten
Commandments) today, would you go to heaven or hell?‖
NOTE:
At this point if they say ―heaven‖ go back to Romans 3:12
and remind them that even they have admitted that they are no
good.
If they say that they would go to ―hell‖ then it‘s time to
proceed further by asking—
NOTE:
It‘s important for them to understand the consequences of
their sin.
We can help them do this by briefly describing the harsh
realities of hell.
―where their worm does not die and the fire is not quenched.‖
(Conscious; Suffering)
Mark 9:48
Call two people from your church and ask them the
following questions—
o Do you share your faith regularly?
o Do you go out of your way to share the Gospel
with strangers?
o If not, why don‘t you? What is the main reason
you don‘t share the Gospel?
Write down your answers and bring them next week
for t-Synch Group Discussion.
3. Overcoming Fear
Love for God (Mk. 12:30)
Love for the Lost (Rm. 9:1-3)
o They face the certainty of an eternity in hell;
you face the possibility of persecution for a
time.
Word of Wisdom—
―I do not believe that any man can preach the Gospel who does not
preach the Law. The Law is the needle, and you cannot draw the
silken thread of the Gospel through a man‘s heart unless you first
send the needle of the Law to make way for it.‖

Mark 9:48
4. Close in Prayer
―We may depend on it: men will never come to Jesus, and live for
Jesus, unless they really know why they are come. Those whom
the Spirit draws to Jesus are those whom the Spirit has convinced
of sin. Without thorough conviction of sin, men may seem to come
to Jesus and follow Him for a season, but they will soon fall away
and return to the world.‖
Discuss the Break Out of Your Comfort Zone Assignment
from last week
I Cor. 15:1-5
1 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to
you, which you received, in which you stand,
2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I
preached to you- unless you believed in vain.
3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received:
that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,
4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in
accordance with the Scriptures,
5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.
The Gospel
Hebrews 4:15
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to
sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in
every respect has been tempted as we are, yet
without sin.
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we have loved God
but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins.
Illustration:
Propitiation means that Jesus‘ death satisfied God‘s justice and
wrath over your sin.
For example what is the best way to put out a fire? Pour water on it
until it was completely out. That‘s what the blood or the death of
Christ did to the fires of hell for you.
His shed blood completely saturated the fires of hell for you
and God is no longer angry with you over your sin.
Jesus said from the cross: ―It is finished.‖
Meaning there is no longer any condemnation or penalty waiting
for those that trust in Him for salvation.
He rose from the dead, guaranteeing you
eternal life.
Colossians 2:9
For in him the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily,
He is fully man
1 Timothy 2:5
For there is one God, and there is one mediator
between God and men,
the man Christ Jesus,

Romans 7:22-25
22 For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being,
23 but I see in my members another law waging war against the
law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that
dwells in my members.
24 Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body
of death?
25 Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord!
Discuss how your time sharing the Law went this past
week.
o Did you feel awkward at first?
o Did you sense the benefit of practicing?
o Do you see the necessity of sharing the Law before
the Gospel?
About 15 years ago I had the privilege of going to Salt Lake City to
attend the Southern Baptist annual meeting. Volunteers were
recruited to go out into the city and share the Gospel. I was paired
up with an evangelism veteran who was supposed to show me the
ropes of inner city evangelism. As we drove up into our assigned
neighborhood he spotted two young boys riding bikes and told me
with absolute confidence that he was going to save them first. He
walked up to them and began his conversation—―Hey you all
believe in God right? (Yep.) And you don‘t want to go to hell do
you? (Of course not.) Then just repeat this prayer with me and
you‘ll never have to worry about it again—‗God in heaven, forgive
me of my sins. I am inviting Jesus to come and live in my heart.
Amen‘‖. Dutifully the boys repeated every word. He then went on
to proclaim them saved and had me record as much information
as possible so he could report his numbers. Approximately an hour
later the same two boys rode up on their bikes and told him that
since he shared about his God their mom wanted them to tell us
about their god and one of them then politely handed him the
book of Mormon. As I began taking their names of the record book
he made me stop reasoning: ―They repeated the prayer and that‘s
all that matters. Leave their names on that record.‖
Questions—
What are your impressions of this incident? Do you think
the boys were actually saved? Why or why not?
What did the ―evangelism veteran‖ wrong?
What might you have done differently?
NOTE: Several years later at another annual meeting of
the SBC the attendees approved a resolution admitting that
the SBC could not account for over half of their reported
membership. (At the time the SBC reported about 16
million members but could only account for approximately
8 million). Their conclusion was that it was due to a lack of
follow up and discipleship. I‘m convinced it was and is due
to a watered down version of the Gospel like the example
above).
3. Mini-Devotion
Galatians 1:6-10
6 I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him who called
you in the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel-
7 not that there is another one, but there are some who trouble
you and want to distort the gospel of Christ.
8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a
gospel contrary to the one we preached to you, let him be
accursed.
9 As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone is
preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you received, let him
be accursed.
10 For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I
trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would
not be a servant of Christ.

What does the John 3:18 tell us about Christ
acquitting us of our sins?
John 3:18
Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not
believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the
name of the only Son of God.
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and
sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Acts 2:37-38
37 Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said
to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"
38 And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of
you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,
and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Acts 16:30-31
30 Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be
saved?"
31 And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be
saved, you and your household."

James 2:19

John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that
whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
Matthew 28:19
