Introduction
Sheila was curious on the saturation point of refined white sugar when mixed to
a 100 mL of water at different temperatures. So, she decided to conduct a simple test.
Table 1 shows the results of her tests.

The concentration of a solution can be qualitatively or quantitatively expressed or
written.
The quality of the solution is the bases for the qualitative expression of the
concentration of solute in a solution. This quality may refer to the appearance, fluidity,
texture, or taste of the solution. If the appreciation of the observer to the quality of the
solution believed to have more solute, then the concentration of the solution is said to
be concentrated. If the solution contains less amount of solute present in the solution,
then the qualitative description of the concentration of solution is diluted. This
happens when more solvent is present in the solution. For example, commercial grade
hydrochloric acid also known as muriatic acid available in the store near you has a
concentration of 30-32%. Knowing the concentration of acid gives us the idea of the
danger of the product if not used properly. To properly use the product, we have to
reduce the concentration of the acid. We may do that by adding about 16 ml of muriatic
acid to at least 84 ml of water to dilute the acid to around 5%. In this way, it is safe to
use the acid for home cleaning purposes only. Always remember to mix the acid in the
manner mentioned here. Add the acid to the water, not the other way around. Strong
acid like this, has the highest tendency to splash out of container if water is added to
it and may pose danger to us. Since water is used a solvent, the solution is called
aqueous solution.
The quantitative expression of the concentration of solute in a solution is
based on the actual measurable quantity. This quantity may refer to the mass and the
volume of the solute present in a measured amount of solution. There are many ways
to quantitatively express the concentration of the solution, but for this module, we will
write the concentration of the solution in percentage (%).
The Percentage expression of the concentration of solute in a solution can be in
three (3) different ways;
• Mass over Mass (Mass/Mass),
• Volume over Volume (Volume/Volume), or
• Mass over Volume (Mass/Volume).
What does it mean? It means that the unit of quantity at the numerator is the
amount of solute while the unit of quantity at the denominator is the amount of solution.
The manner to calculate the percentage concentration of the solution is the same
regardless of the units used. Below is the formula of calculating the percentage
concentration of the solution.
𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑒
% = [𝑎𝑚𝑜𝑢𝑛𝑡 𝑜𝑓 𝑠𝑜𝑙𝑢𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛] X 100%
Let us put your understanding to the test! Solve the problems below using the
formula above. Write your answers on a separate sheet of papers.
1. What would be the concentration of the solution if Maria added 10 grams of
powder detergent to a 100 ml of water? __________________
2. Your family prepares for a picnic that morning. Your mother told you to make a
sauce with 6 tsp of vinegar mixed with 6 tsp of soy sauce. You know that she
5
hates very sour sauce on any occasions. Should you prepare the solution as instructed
or not? Support your answer with the calculated concentration of vinegar-soy sauce
solution.
Hint: 1 tsp is equals to 4.9 ml.

Activity 3
How much solutes are there in the solutions?
Introduction
You have learned that to quantitatively express the concentration of the solute in
the solution is to simply divide the value of the numerator by the denominator and
multiply this quotient by 100 %.
𝒂𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒆
% =[ ] X 100%
𝒂𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏
Sometimes, you need to find out the amount of solute needed for a given
concentration. To do this simply multiply the concentration of the solution by the
amount of solution and divide this product by 100%
𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑿 𝒔𝒐𝒍𝒖𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒂𝒎𝒐𝒖𝒏𝒕
amount solute =
𝟏𝟎𝟎 %
Always convert the percentage into the tenth decimal point by moving the
decimal point twice from the right. For example, 100% 1.00, and 5% 0.05.
Directions
Complete table 4 by calculating the missing data. Write your final answers in a
separate sheet of paper. Rank the solutions by writing numbers 1 to 10 in the 4th
column.

COVID-19 Disinfection liquid
Introduction
DOH had encouraged everyone to stay protected from the threat of COVID-19
virus by being vigilant. Since we cannot see this virus, we should always clean
ourselves and our surroundings. DOH suggested to use 5% bleach solution as liquid
cleaning agent.
7
In this activity, you will prepare a 100 mL of 5% bleach aqueous solution and use
this solution to clean the surroundings of your home. Never perform this activity
without the presence of your parents or your older siblings for your own safety.
Materials
Bleach (any brand)
Water
1 pc of 1-liter container
Measuring cup with a minimum measuring capacity of 100 mL
Pair of hand gloves (rubberize or plastic)
Directions
1. Collect all the materials needed to prepare this solution.
2. Calculate the amount of bleach needed to prepare the 5% 100 ml bleach-aqueous
solution. write your answers on a separate sheet of paper.
3. To get the amount of solvent, subtract the calculated amount of solute from the
total amount of solution.
4. Subtract the calculated amount of bleach to 100 mL of water. The difference is the
amount of water needed to prepare the solution.
5. Measure this amount of water and pour it into a 1-liter container.
6. Then measure the amount of bleach based from your computation.
7. Since, we will be preparing solutions with bleach, pour it into the water. Never add
water into the bleach for your safety.
8. Use this solution to clean the surroundings of your home.
9. Due to the current situation, your teacher can not physically assess your product.
Instead, send a photo to your teacher as proof of your product and another photo
that you actually use the product.

Activity 5
Alcohol proof
Introduction
As mentioned earlier. There are many ways to show the concentration of
solution. This way is called “proof” or also called as “alcohol proof”. Dr. Anne Marrie
Helmenstine explains the definition of proof in her article “Alcohol Proof and Definition
and Examples” in the webpage of “ThoughCo”. According to her, proof is twice the
volume of ethyl alcohol in an alcoholic beverage. Meaning the alcohol content to any
beverages in percentage is half of the proof.
Furthermore, AlcoholRehab.com, is developed and maintained by American
Addiction Centers, Inc (AAC), a nationwide network of leading substance abuse and
behavioral treatment facilities posted on May 5, 2019 that an estimate of 60% of young
people would have at least tried alcohol before then. In addition, drinking prevents
people from performing well in school.
Ann I Balsa, Laura M. Giuliano, and Michael T. French had something to say
about the effect of alcohol use on academic achievement in high school. According to
them that alcohol had a negative effect to the grades of the students partially pointing
to the increased school absences and difficulties with school-related tasks.
In this activity, you will measure the alcohol content
of common alcohol beverage in most areas in the
city.
Guide questions (write your answers on a
separate sheet of papers).
1. What is the percentage concentration of alcohol
in this beverage? ________________________
2. Based on your computation, how much alcohol in
ml does this beverage has? ________________
3. Why is not advisable to make a habit of drinking
