SAMPLE ASSESSMENT ITEMS

Guidance to the Teacher

These sample test items are intended to guide teachers of CRE on how to develop
end-of-year assessment items for Senior One and Two. They do not constitute a
complete examination paper for the subject. To determine the number of items
in the paper, the teacher should consider the demand of each item on the test
taker and the duration an average learner can spend providing the required
response. Ideally, at this level, a CRE examination should not take more than 1
hour and 30 minutes. The teacher should benchmark on the samples provided
rather than replicate them.
Below each item, the learning outcomes assessed are indicated. This is intended
to remind the teacher to keep the syllabus learning outcomes in mind while
developing the items.
SHORT RESPONSE ITEMS

1 “There are so many religions in the world with different beliefs and practices”.
Explain two ways in which learning about other religions than one’s own is
important in society today. (5)
Learning outcomes assessed:

 Understand the characteristics of religions other than their own for purposes
of harmonious living (u)
 Appreciate the values of other religions (u, v)

2 “How you respect your life and the lives of the others is more important than
what you believe”. Using two examples, discuss this statement in light of
Christian teachings (5)

3 Mr. Luna is a Christian who reads the Bible during his free time. He used to play
the piano at the cathedral. After retirement, he decided to start his life in the

 village. The cathedral is 50 kilometres away from that village. However, in his
neighborhood there is a small church where prayers are continuous
throughout the day and night. The members of the small church sing and play
musical instruments loudly. This is something strange to Mr. Luna. He is confused
and unhappy. He feels like he is losing his Christian grip. Using the views of
Christianity, advise Mr Luna on what to do under the circumstances.
Learning outcome assessed:
Understand the emerging practices of worship in the modern world in relation to
the teaching of the Bible.

4 Your friend Kote, who is 16 years old, just finished her Senior Four. As she waited
for her results, she did not want to keep idle. Her father got her a job through
his best friend, who became her supervisor. She was very happy and started
her new job. Unfortunately, her supervisor, a 49-year-old man, wants to marry
her traditionally, as his second wife. Write a piece of advice to your friend Kote
on how to deal with the situation. (10)
