according to the request of the trainee. we give training service starting from the basics of upholstery to
the advanced and complicated skills.
Upon the training request provided by Actuel Designs, Acacia manufacturing plc has prepared the
following proposal to be considered by the concerned party.
Upholstery is the materials—which include fabric, padding, webbing, and springs—that make up the soft
coverings of chairs, sofas, and other furniture. Wooden or metal frame structure is required upon which
the desired upholstery is to be done. In this training program, the training will be given on both the
upholstery and wooden frame making.
The main training areas
Furniture Upholsterer;
• Installs repairs or replaces upholstery of furniture.
• Form patterns by hand according to the desired design.
• Installs buttons and other decorative materials.
• Removes old upholstery and replace the damaged peace with new fitting part.
• Stretches and tacks new webbing to frame.
• Places cotton, rubber composition or other soft material over springs for padding,
• Cuts covering fabric to size and tacks it in place.
• Tacks braid over end of covering material to conceal rough edges.
• may do minor repairs to broken wooden parts of furniture
• sew covering material.
Wood or metal frame maker;
• Identify type of material needed for the desired furniture work
• Takes measurements for furnishings or works from drawings, cuts, welds and builds the
frame for the furniture according to the desired design.
• Repairs to broken wooden structure parts.
Tailor, Cushion Stuffer;
• Cuts and sews fabric following the patterns and designs to make desired shape.
• Cushion Mat Maker makes cushion covers and stuffs them with fiber, feather, or cotton.
• Cuts upholstery cloth according to size of cushion and sews pieces together, leaving opening
at one end.
• Stuffs material into cushion and beats cushion with hand or stick to make packing even.
• Sews open end of cover and stitches piping along edges to preserved shape of cushion.
• May repair and rebuild cushions.
Foam technician;
• Selects foam type, thickness, density and composition for upholstery work.
• Designs, make patterns, cuts, shapes, bonds or manipulate foam according the desired
furniture design.
• Installs and make final markings and cuts holes or other patterns as per the design.
Training is given in three stages. The first stage of the training will be the basics of upholstery in which
trainees will learn how to use and manipulate upholstery making tools, fabric selection, reading and
cutting fabric patterns, button making, decorative materials making, fold and cuts making, simple
ottoman bench and box with in-lining making, drop-in seats making, box and bolster cushion making.
On the second stage trainees will further develop their training by engaging in more technical upholstery
works like ram and armless chairs making, t-shaped cushion making, foam cutting and installation, fabric
installation and manipulation and other upholstery technics suited to this stage.
The third stage is the stage where the training program become advanced. In this stage trainees will
engage in making cups and collar fitting, scroll arm chair making, chesterfield sofa making, deep
buttoning and fluting, pattern making with folds, cuts and buttons and other upholstery skills suited to
this stage.
Alongside the three stages trainees will also learn important skills needed to make upholstery. These
include
• Determining amount of material needed to make desired furniture.
• Determining type of material needed to make desired furniture such as type of wood
for frame making, type of fabric, foam and other upholstery materials.
• Understanding measurements, designs and patterns to cut, attach, install or form raw
materials to the desired amount or design.
• Understanding manipulation of types of foam, fiber, cotton, buttons, guides, and other
upholstery materials.
• Operating the sewing machine to make stiches, patterns and folds for upholstery.
• Identifying and using appropriate upholstery tools.
• Designing and building frame for making desired furniture.
• Understanding the upholstery tools and machines so as to make routine maintenance
work.
Training parameters
The training program
• Will be conducted in Amharic in order to achieve better understanding of the program.
• Will be given on upholstery and upholstery related furniture works only.
• Will have theoretical, practical and project sessions.
• Will be given to trainees no less than 8 individuals.
• Will have supportive guide books and materials.
• Will contain evaluation and certification.
• Will be conducted at Actuel Design’s workshop.
• Training tools machines, raw materials and other required items will be supplied by Actuel
Design plc.
The training program will be a full-fledged upholstery course which will be given from a beginner to the
advanced and skilled upholsterer level. The course will be conducted over a period of 60 working days
and will mostly be practical. Trainees will be subjected to experience the upholstery working
environment, steps and techniques first hand. Each training session will be evaluated and passed to the
Actual focal person either orally or in written form. The training course will be in three stages. In ach
stages will be evaluated and a report will be passed or in written form passed to the Actual focal person.
Upon finishing the entire course, trainees will be given a final project. The project then will be evaluated
and certification will be awarded to qualified trainees.
For this training program Acacia furniture and Upholstery will assign 3-4 trainers according to the
schedule. these trainers are well qualified and skilled in upholstery work and has been with Acacia
Furniture and Upholstery in developing various high quality upholstery works. Our best trainers will
engage in this training program to bring out qualified and skilled upholsterers and add value to the
upholstery sector.
For the above mentioned full-fledged upholstery course Acacia Furniture and Upholstery will require
amount of payment birr 90 per hour perindividual trainee.
