QUESTION 1;

Required to develop preferred layout for Lori’s kitchen,

Given;

The present layout as, A B C D

Distance between adjacent areas is 10 feet

The load × distance for the present layout is,

A to B 7 × 10 70
A to C 193 × 20 3860
A to D 12 × 30 360
B to C 4 × 10 40
B to D 82 × 20 1640
C to D 222 ×10 2220
Total 8190

Preferably layout

To develop the preferred layout from table of interdepartmental activities we look on departmental
changes that will reduce material handling cost, in this case we consider distance A to C (20 feet)
which has higher load of 193.

Hence the new layout will be;

B A C D

From the new layout above department A and C are now closer with distance of 10 feet which is 10
less than the given layout.

Loads x distance for the new layout

To calculate load x distance for the new layout we consider departmental changes as illustrated
bellow;
Load x distance
B to A 7 x 10 70
B to C 4 x 20 80
B to D 82 x 30 2460
A to C 193 x 10 1930
A to D 12 x 20 240
C to D 222 x 10 2220
Total 7000

From the above load x distance it shows that the total load x distance is 7000 which is (1190) less
than the given layout which was 8,190.

Hence the new layout is good since it will reduce the material handling cost in Lori’s kitchen.

Improved layout

But the new more improved layout can be done by from the obtained layout by considering B and D
which has larger load of 84.

The refrigerator (B) and work area (D) will be adjacent to each other in the layout below;

A C D B

The load x Distance for the new layout is calculated bellow;

Load x Distance
A to C 193 x10 1930
A to D 12 x 20 240
A to B 7 x 30 210
C to D 222 x 10 2220
D to B 82 x 10 820
C to B 4 x 20 80
Total 5500
From the above improved layout the total load x distance is 5500 which is 2690 less than the given
layout which was 8190.

Hence the new preferred layout will be;

A C D B

Where cooking burners (A) will be adjacent to Dish washing(C), Dish washing (c) will be adjacent to
Refrigerator (B) and Refrigerator (B) will be adjacent to Work area (D).

Question 2;

Given; Total output to be produced per day = 40 units

Production time available per day = 8 hours = 280 minutes

Total task time = 38 minutes

Required; Cycle time and appropriate number of work station to produce 40 units per day

Cycle time

From Cycle time (CT) = production time available / Units required

CT = 280/40 = 12minutes

Hence Cycle time (CT) = 12minutes

Theoretical number of work stations

Number of work stations = ∑Task time/ cycle time

NW = 38 minutes /12 minutes

NW = 3.17 Round to 4

Hence the theoretical number of work stations is 4 stations.

Actual number of work stations

By using most following task actual the number of work stations can be calculated as bellow;

STATION TASK TASK TIME TIME LEFT TASK READY

1 A 2 10 B, C
C 8 2 B,D
B 2 - D,E
2 D 6 6 E,F
E 3 3 Idle F
3 F 10 2 Idle G
4 G 4 8 H
H 3 5 Idle -

Actual number of work station is 4

Thus the number of work station required to produce 40 units per day is 4 work stations

THE FLOW OF WORKSTATIONS WILL AS INDICATED BELOW;

2 2 3

A B E 10

F G
4 H3

4 3
C D
