PRACTICAL EXERCISE # 2

PROBLEM SOLVING

1. The following table shows data on the average number of customers processed by
several bank units each day. The hourly wage rate is P75, the overhead rate is 1.0 times
labor cost and material cost is P20 per customer.
a. Compute the labor productivity and the multifactor productivity for each unit.
Unit Employees Customers
Processed
A 4 36
B 5 40
C 8 60
D 3 20

Labor Productivity = Customer Processed per day_______________

Number of employee x number of man hour

A. 36 = 36 = 1.1.25
4 x8 32

B. 40 = 40 =1
5 x8 40

C. 60 = 60 = 0.94
8x 8 64

D. 20 = 20 = 0.83
3 x 8 24

Multifactor Productivity = Customer Processed

Labor cost + overhead cost + material cost

Labor cost = labor cost x manpower x man hour

Material cost = materials cost x customer processed

A. Labor cost = 75 x 4 x 8
= 2400

Material cost = 20 x 36
= 720

Multifactor Productivity = ____36_________

= 2400 + 2400 +720
= ____36_________
5520
= 0.0065

B. Labor cost = labor cost x manpower x man hour

= 75 x 5 x 8
= 3000

Material cost = materials cost x customer processed

= 20 x 40
= 800

Multifactor Productivity = ____40_________

= 3000 + 3000 +800
= ____40________
6800
= 0.005

C. Labor cost = labor cost x manpower x man hour

= 75 x 8 x 8
= 4800

Material cost = materials cost x customer processed

= 20 x 60
= 1200

Multifactor Productivity = ____60_________

= 4800 + 4800 +1200
= ____60________
10800
= 0.005

D. Labor cost = labor cost x manpower x man hour

= 75 x 3 x 8
= 1800

Material cost = materials cost x customer processed

= 20 x 20
= 400

Multifactor Productivity = ____20_________

= 1800 + 1800 +400
= ____20_______
4000
= 0.005

c. What is the probability that project completion time will meet the 35-day deadline?

Project Duration= 38 days

Scheduled Time = 35 Days

Probability = Scheduled Time – Project Duration / σ

Probability = 35 – 38 / 3.33
Probability = -0.45

4. System of Linear Equations

4.1 Determine whether the following pairs of equations are consistent, dependent, or
inconsistent.
a. 7x + 2y = 4 and 5x – 3y = 7

y=mx + b

7x+2y=4
(2y=-7x+4)1/2
y=-7/2x+2

5x – 3y = 7
(-3y=-5x+7)-1/3
y=5/3x-7/3

Consistent and dependent because there is only one solution and slope of two equations
are different. Therefore, two lines intersect at one point.
4.2 Solve the system of linear equations by elimination method
a. 2x + y = 10 and x – y = 2

2x + y = 10
+x -y=2
3x +0 = 12

3x = 12
x=12/3
x=4

x – y =2
4 – y =2
4-2 = y
y= 2

Checking:
2x+y=10
2(4)+2=10
8+2=10
10=10

x-y=2
4-2=2
2=2

4.3 Solve the system of linear equations by substitution method

a. 2x + y = 18 and x – y = 9

y=mx+b

Value of y in first equation:

y = 18-2x

Substitute y in the second equation:

x-(18-2x) = 9
x-18+2x=9
3x=9+18
3x=27
x=27/3
x=9

Substitute value of x in y = 18-2x:

y = 18-2(9)
y = 18-18
y=0
Checking:
2x + y =18
2(9) + 0=18
18=18

x-y=9
9-0=9
9=9

4.4 Solve the system of linear equations by equivalent equations

a. 2x + 3y = 1 and –x + y = -3

Equivalent equation by switching sides:

y=x-3

substitute x to the first equation

2x + 3(x-3) = 1
2x+3x-9=1
5x=1+9
5x=10
x=10/5
x=2

substitute x in y=x-3
y=2-3
y=-1

Checking:
2x+3y=1
2(2)+3(-1)=1
4-3=1
1=1

-x+y=-3
-2+(-1)=-3
-2-1=-3
-3=-3

4.5 Solve the system of linear equations by Cramer’s rule.

a. 2x + 3y = 6 and 2x – 2y = 1

2x + 3y = 6
2x – 2y = 1

2 3 6
2 -2 1

D = 2(-2) – 3(2)
D = -4 -6
D = -10

6 3
1 -2

Dx = 6(-2) – 3(1)
Dx = -12 – 3
Dx = -15

2 6
2 1

Dy = 2(1) – 6(2)
Dy = 2-12
Dy = -10

x = Dx/D
x=-15/-10
x = 1.5

y=Dy/D
y=-10/-10
y=1

Checking:
2x + 3y = 6
2(1.5)+3(1)=6
3+3=6
6=6

2x – 2y = 1
2(1.5)-2(1)=1
3-2=1
1=1

4.6 Solve the system of linear equations by graphical methods.

a. 2x + y = 0 and 3x + y = 1

y =mx+b
y = -2x + 0
y y = -3x +1

4 x=1
3 y = -2
2

x
-5 -4 -3 -2 -1 1 2 3 4 5
-1
(1,-2)
-2
-3

-5

Checking:
2x +y =0
2(1)+(-2)=0
2-2=0
0=0

3x + y = 1
3(1)+(-2)=1
3-2=1
1=1
