Pshe Letter
The purpose of this letter is to discuss the general topic that comes to mind, when you talk
about modern-day problems: extinct, endangered, and threatened animals. First of all, in order
to gain an in-depth understanding, we need to understand the difference between extinct,
endangered and threatened animals. “Endangered” means a species is in danger of extinction
throughout all or a significant portion of its range. “Threatened” means a species is likely to
become endangered within the foreseeable future. Generally speaking, they are animals and
plants that are in decline and may be in danger of extinction. Threatened species are any
species which are vulnerable to endangerment in the near future. Species that are threatened
are sometimes characterised by the population dynamics measure of critical depensation, a
mathematical measure of biomass related to population growth rate.
Despite UAE being a small country, with a mediocre history, especially when compared to other
countries, it still has a lot of endangered species:
Let’s take the Hawksbill turtle as an example. Hawksbill turtles are much sought after
throughout the tropics for their brown and yellow carapace plates that are manufactured into
tortoiseshell items, such as jewellery and ornaments. Other reasons for their decline include
loss of nesting and feeding habitats due to rising water levels, excessive egg collection, fishery-
related mortality, pollution, coastal development and illegal wildlife trade.
• Adopt a Turtle — Join the Marine Turtle Conservation Project, launched in 2010 by Emirates
Wildlife Society in association with WWF (EWS-WWF), by signing up for their program at
gulfturtles.com.
• Check Out for Turtles — Retailers, hotels, dive centres and restaurants interested in showing
their support can join this initiative by asking guests to voluntarily donate Dh10 to the turtle
conservation program at the time of check out.
Biodiversity
You may ask what is biodiversity and why is it so vital? Well, biodiversity is the amount of variety
of life on Earth. It is the number of different species of plants, animals, and microorganisms. It
includes organisms from Earth’s vastly different ecosystems, including deserts, rainforests, coral
reefs, grasslands, tundra, and polar ice caps. Our biodiversity is very important to the well-being
of our planet. Most cultures, at least at some time, have recognized the importance of
conserving natural resources. Many still do, but many do not.
Now that you gained a greater understanding of this topic, I would like to proceed by stating that
we should invest more into programs that promote animal safety, and biodiversity. Which, as I
stated before, if done correctly comes with many benefits.
Yours truly,
Kirill Momoh
