Detailed Lesson Plan in Science 11

By: Iza Jay Donato

I. Objectives
Within the given period, the students are expected to do the following with at least 75% level of
accuracy.
 States how the different organs of the digestive system work.
 Participate actively in tracing how these organs of the digestive digest foods; and
 Illustrate the organs that are part of the Digestive System
II. Subject Matter
Topic: The Digestive System

Materials: short video clip of the digestive system, PowerPoint, laptop, Cartolina, marker,
crayons, double-sided tape, paper, speaker for the background music,

Reference: Science Learner’s Module

III. Procedure:

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

A. Preparation
 Greetings “Good morning class! How is “Good morning, ma’am. We
your day so far?” are fine.”

“That’s good to hear! So,

can I expect a full blast of
energy and active “Yes, ma’am”
participation from you?”

 Prayer “Before we begin the

lesson this morning, let us
ask the guidance of
Almighty God, and let us
enlighten our minds to
completely understand the
lesson this morning.

Anna, Would you please (Anna will lead the

lead the prayer?” prayer)

“Before you seat, please (Students pick up pieces

properly.”

“You may now take your (Students will take their

“Before we proceed let me
 Checking check your attendance (Students will say present
Attendance first. Say present if your if their name is called)
name is called.”

I think everyone is
present. I’m so glad that
everyone understands the
reasons for coming to
school regularly.

“Before we proceed to the

lecture proper, let’s play a
B. Motivation game first. The game is
called “CABBAGE RELAY”.
I have prepared a paper
cabbage. Music will play in
the background, and you will
pass the cabbage to your
classmates. The last student
who is holding the cabbage
when the music stops need
to peel a layer of the
cabbage. Each layer has a
scrambled letter. You are
going to arrange the letters
and shout “YUMMY” if the
combined letter belongs to
food, and “EW” if it does not
belong to food.

Did you understand the

Yes, ma’am!
mechanics?

Is everyone ready? Yes, ma’am. We are ready!

All right! Let us play the *Music is playing in the

“CABBAGE RELAY” background*

(The following are the

words written on each layer
of the cabbage: Chicken
Nuggets, Bread, Cake,
Banana, Umbrella, Shoes,
Scissors, Pineapple, Pizza,
Jar.)
Did you enjoy our game? Yes, ma’am.

Very good!

Class, you may not take your

seats.

Based on our game, what do

C. Presentation you think is our lesson for
today?
Yes, Michael? About the digestive system
ma’am.

You’re right!

Have you ever wondered

why you shout “YUMMY”
after arranging the
scrambled letters? Is it
related to our lesson for
today?
Yes, Mike? We shout “YUMMY” when
the scrambled letter is all
about food because it is
what we eat. When we eat
those foods, they will
eventually through the
process of digestion. That is
why it is related, ma’am.

Very good!

So, our lesson for today is all

about the digestive system.

Now class, the topic that we

D. Discussion are going to tackle today is
all about the digestive
system.

As we continue the
discussion, I have here a
short video clip regarding
the digestive system. View
and take down important
facts and information for I
will ask questions later,
okay? Yes, Ma’am

(Playing the video clip

about the digestive on the
screen)
Class, based on the video
clip that I have played a
while ago, how does
digestion begins? It starts from the mouth Sir.

Very good!
That is the first stage that
undergoes the process of
ingestion.

What is the next organ that

the food passes through? Sir, the esophagus.

Exactly! You’re correct!

Then how does the

esophagus work? Ma’am, the esophagus
works as a passageway of
food to reach the stomach
by the process of peristalsis.
Excellent answer!

Now, what organ comes

next after the esophagus? Stomach ma’am

You’re right!

What’s the role of the

stomach in the digestive
system? The stomach is where it
mixes with juices and acids
and where digestion takes
place.
Very good!

Digestion is the second

stage/process involved in
food processing

What is the next organ?

That’s correct!
Small intestine maam
Now, how does the small
intestine work?

Sir, it is where the

absorption of nutrients will
take place to be used by the
Very good answer! cell.

Absorption is the third

stage/process in the
digestion of foods.

What is the next organ

involved in the digestive
system after small
intestines? Large intestine Sir!

What is the role of this organ

in digestion? The large intestine is used
to absorbed water from the
waste material leftover.
Very good!

After that what’s next?

All leftover waste material

is compacted and stored at
the end of the large
intestine, called the rectum,
before being excreted out
of the body through the
Excellent! anus.

That is now the last stage in

digestion, the process
involved is elimination.

Some accessory organs are

also attached that help
maximize foods digestion.
What are they?
Ma’am, these are the liver,
Ok! In what ways do these gall bladder and pancreas.
organs help in digestion?

Liver helps in the

production of bile which
help in the excretion of
excess cholesterol.

Gall bladder stores bile until

it is needed in the small
intestines.

Pancreas secretes insulin

and glucagon, for the
digestion of starch, fats,
Very good! and proteins.

Those are the organs that

make up the digestive
system.

So, class, do you know how

food moves through your
gastrointestinal tract?
No, Ma’am
So, the food moves through
your GI tract by a process
called peristalsis. The large,
hollow organs of your GI
tract contain a layer of
muscle that enables their
walls to move. The
movement pushes food and
liquid through your GI tract
and mixes the contents
within each organ. The
muscle behind the food
contracts and squeezes the
food forward, while the
muscle in front of the food
relaxes to allow the food to
move.

Okay. Now, do you have any

questions or clarifications
regarding our topic this
morning?
Yes, Rowan?

Class, digestion is important Ma’am, why is digestion

because your body needs important?
nutrients from the food you
eat and the liquids you drink
to stay healthy and function
properly. Nutrients include
carbohydrates, proteins,
fats, vitamins, minerals, and
water. Your digestive system
breaks down and absorbs
nutrients from the food and
liquids you consume to use
for important things like
energy, growth, and
repairing cells.

Are there any more

questions or clarifications
regarding the topic?

Now, to test your None, ma’am.

understanding of the topic,
we will have an activity.

You will be divided into 5

E. Application groups.

I have here a material that

you will use for your activity.

All you must do is illustrate

the Digestive system and
place the organs that make
up the digestive system
exactly. You need to choose
one representative in your
group to explain your work.

Your work will be

scored/rated by the
following rubrics.

Rubrics:
Neatness – 10 pts
Style – 10 pts
Creativity – 30 pts

You will be given 15 minutes

to do your activity.

Am I clear?

Good. You may now start

your activity

Okay, times Up!

Yes, Ma’am
Paste your work on the
blackboard.

The first group to present is

group 1, followed by group
2, group 3, group 4, and
group 5.

Thank you, class!

You may now take your (Students are now
seats. presenting their work)

Just a little recap.

Digestion starts when food is

taken into the mouth.

What do you call the

F. Generalization stage/process where is the
taking in of food through the
mouth?

Yes, Marie?

The second stage/process

involved in theeaking down
of foods into nutrients.

The next stage/process in “Ingestion”

the digestive process is
involved in theking in of
nutrients by the cell.
And the last process is “Digestion”
removing of any leftover
wastes/materials from the
body.
“Absorption”

Very good

Now, you better understand “Elimination”

how digestion works and
how the digestive system's
various organs cooperate to
break down food for the
body to use.
